Title: Regulations for fishing in the restricted area by Earl Naval Pier
Post by: ShelfromNJ on June 15, 2010, 11:45:45 AM
I noticed several boats including party boats fishing in the restricted area by Earl.  I also seen clam boats going through the area.  Are the restrictions relaxed for fisherman?

i am surprised if they are.  If you come anywhere close to the restricted area, they will come chase you out with guns on their boats.

Are you sure you know where the line is?  Not asking this condescendingly, I would just find it hard to believe a boat within the restricted area wouldn't have a gun in their face.

those buoys should be clearly visable.  They won't even let you drive close to the perimeter.

Agreed.  I have seen people nearby that look like they're alot closer than they really are from my distant vantage point, but upon closer inspection they're well out of range.

I go right pass the restricted area on my way to the marina and I always stay out. I go as close as I can and I know they are in the restricted area. The patrol boat sometimes chases them out but most of the time they are just watching.  I see this all the time.  I wonder if it depends if a navy ship is in port.

Answer is no you cannot Fish/Clam/Swim or Boat through the restricted zone.

The zone pretty much goes from the Belford Channel on the West to the Leonardo Channel to the East. It is all marked with White Buey's.

Sometimes depending upon your position a boat may appera to be in the zone and its not.......

If you really Pee them off it is a $500 fine, or they  will impound your boat and lock you up if you give them a hard time..............

Also be sure when you are out there during hunting season that you don't set out 100  scaup decoys  near or slighlyt over the perimeter line prior to the sun coming up. The patrol boats scare all the ducks away when they are escorting you in for the interrogation.

That sounds like you have first hand experience with that Capt. Birch. ;D

Their attack boats have a tower mounted M2 .50 cal machine gun and are usually captained by junior grade Naval Officers. On board are usually 1 or 2 Marines trained as MP's. They have M16's and sidearms. There are also more than one 120mm gun batteries on the piers, and they are manned 24/7---as are the attack boats. They have that place pretty well secured, and they do not fool around----I learned that the hard way (innocently enough). Give them a wide berth!

several years ago I drifted into the area in my old Grady white..went to start engine(12 dollar oil pressure valve) as they came at me fast with sirens blasting...they took all my info....drivers license from both be and my fishin buddy...and proceeded to bump me all the way out of the zone!..not a fun experience and I think totally uncalled for...they could have towed me the short distance...needless to say... I fish far away from that area! t^ chrz
