What's the most produtive way to chum for stripers? (FAQ)

Although I really like the idea of taking batting practice with the surf clams and a Louisville. My luck would be that one of my customers would hit me on the back swing. :o
I shuck the clams throwing the shells over. As I shuck the clams I do it over a bucket so the the juice and the clam belly fall into the bucket. Some of the clams I cut into some pieces and once in a while throw a hand full over the side. The rest I leave hole for my baits.I am not trying to feed the fish but just trying to bring them to our baits. Also I'll pour some of the clam juice over too.
I know guys that will use chum pots and have had success. I have tried it but to me it seems to draw in more of the junk fish. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

We use a 2 1/2 gal bucket with frozen clam bellies, chopped reel fine hung about 2-4 ft from the bottom (depending on location and tide) like Capt Craig we smash the clams around the boat and save the juice from the sucked clams.
If I suck a bussel or so within 2 days of fishing I leave the juice in the bucket and smash up the shells......every 5-10 min I'll throw a hand full over in addition two smashing whole clams........ all depends on location, current and the bite ;)
No real problem with junk fish, early on we put out 2-3 flounder rigs also, generally pick up a few bonus fish while tagging the line siders

I always smash a couple whole clams w/ a fish club {used to use a aluminum bat but hurt my ears}once my anchor is set after that I smash the shells and let them flutter down to the bottom as I shuck the clams I save all the juice and dump a little every so often.when the blues are not to bad I like to throw out a handfull of ground up bunker if the blues show up I pull the lines for a couple min. and let them move to the next boat.if I dont have grounded up bunker I just throw small chunks

I always put a bucket of bellies on the bottom. I use a canyon chum bag with a ten pound plate in it. Will shake the bag every once in a while. Will also crack clams until I get them going. Many times I had bass follow the bag up while checking it. I will crack shells but really don't find this effective. Bass don't eat shells. I like to feed them and keep them tight to the boat. Also will cut the tounges off the clams and cut into small pieces to chum with. Try the fozen bellies that are flowing out of bag. Sometimes these produce better then fresh.

I haven't tried chumming for stripers, but with this info, I will be trying it.

I'm planning on doing some stripper fishing next weekend. I've never been very successful in the past, so its great to hear tips from eveyone.

If I missed it, in what general area do you live.
Also, do you mainly fish boat or surf?
There are two main bodies of fish I am watching. One is off of Beach Haven and a bit south. The other is off of Ambrose north.
Until or if the bunker come, Stripers will be elusive like the good old days. We will help teach you how to fish them pre-bunker reduction boat days.
Get your yellow and black bombers ready and I hope you like fishing in the dark!

When I am on the clam beds by the Hook I break up some clams and put them in an onion sack. Tie a 10lb mushoom anchor below the bag and let it over the side until the anchor his bottom. You need the heavy anchor to hold bottom in the tide. Fish right behind and next to the bag. There have been days when guys on the other side of the boat never got a hit while on the bag side we had a steady bite. If the endangered dogs are around they will shred the onion sack but they are cheap (free).

I'm new to the site but I found shucking the clams and throwing the smashed shells over productive. Theres usually enough meat on the shells to draw them in and you have the main part for bait. Also the fresh clams draw them in better than the frozen bellies. But if you don't want to work too hard the frozen bellies work also. Just make sure there down on the bottom. And make sure you smash the shells catching them later sucks.

Chumming seems to always be productive but doesn't that draw the bluefish?
I once saw an ad for a device that would hold the chum in the bucket in the water and would only release it once it hit bottom.

not that i have ever caught a striper before but put them clams away and chunk, chunk chunk, did i say chunk. Fresh bunker and chunk. But i never chunked before so let me know if it works slt

Put a weight in your bag and hook it to the anchor line with a shackle tie a 1/4 nylon or poly line to it so you can shake it. Put the bag ahead of the boat for good chum flow at the back of the boat
