Little Egg Reef was producing Fluke this week although there have been logs of throwbacks in the mix.   By the way, if you are coming up with half a Fluke, it is probably a brown shark.   They are all over the place.   Snapper blues and nice blues in the 5-7 lb. range are also cruising the reef sites.

Father and son team Ed & John Hunt, or should we say John “Shark-Hunt-er” had a nice day Saturday with a 40lb. Thresher Shark weighed in at the marina which was caught on a top/bottom rig with a minnow.   Nice job guys.   Last week John brought in a nice brown shark also (see photo gallery) caught on his fluke rig.   Had a few reports over the past week or so of Hammerhead sharks cruising the waters.

Bay fishing remains rough but there are still keeper Fluke in the mix of the smaller fish.   Reports of weakfish found in front of the Coast Guard Station.  Kingfish still haven’t really found their home in Great Bay yet but we are expecting them to show up any time now.   Crabbing remains slow.

LE Reef continues to produce Fluke.   Most guys are catching close to their limits when conditions are right.   Gulp shrimp and swimming mullet have been doing very well.   Sea Bass have hit the coolers also.   Slammer blues continue to crash the bunker schools.   Inside, the Fluking is getting harder but if you drift deep water, your chances of bringing home some keepers increase dramatically.   Kingfish still spotty but should be here soon.   One rental boat did manage catching two croakers which is a welcome sign.

This morning’s weather was pretty nasty and only a handful of anglers got out into the ocean who probably shouldn’t have even but out with the small craft in effect.  Even heard of several distress calls.  Seas were extremely rough until the winds died down early this afternoon.   The others who stayed in the bay also faced some rough waters foe the first part of the day   but it was a tough fast drift.   On the happier side, king fish have showed up with a little more force with one customer landing seven while chumming. Loads of snapper blues all over.  Crabbing is still tough but should make a good recovery by the end of the month.

Started early today, got to the reef (LE) fished on the eastern side of the research buoys, had 6 throw backs and 5 keepers 17 1/2' to 22', it was a little rough in the AM, used 10 ounce sinkers to reach the bottom, wind slowed a bit before noon, dropped to  6 ounces, a couple of more throw backs so I called it a day. t^

When I grow up I want to be an Osprey. ;D Fished the LER area on Saturday. We had 11 keeper fluke. 9 were over 20 inches. Had a mix of little blues also. They make good bait.

thank you to the people that welcomed me to the site. now i am gonna ask some advice of the great bayers out there: i'm new to great bay, have some family in mystic, came up from southern nj in search of a different type of fishing.(those who have fished the southern waters will understand) I'm trying to find a "shortcut" if you will from the mullica to the stink house without having to follow the channel markers on the northern part of the bay. Followed a few through on sunday with a low tide and no problems except i don't own an accurate plotter, yet, or i would have marked it, i know the channels are pretty tight. so any hints or help i can get i would greatly appreciate the little bit of time and gas savings.

There is an orange ball at the stakes just behind the stink house, most boaters that run from Great Bay Marina go that way, best advice would be to follow one out and save it as a route on your gps, I come out of Round About creek, and head for the danger marker just south of it, then follow the ICW out to the inlet,it's about the same time as going to the ball, just my opinion.

Good luck. TT^

Had some reports of nice fluke off the Rutgers Buoys, and further south off the AC reef. Some nice sea bass and croakers picked up off LER, mostly on Sand eels or Smelt. Nobody had any killer days, but they were boating fish. A lot of shorts, but remember, a 16 7/8 fish is a short.

this is about the A.C. had a company sponsored trip on a party boat saturday, small craft warning, they were right. saw some as tall as 10' from the bottom of the trough out there and thats no fish tale. was about 8 miles off the coast on a few different ship wrecks. ton of sea bass, especially shorts, 1 throw back fluke, 1 throw back tog, and a bunch of porgy. made it back out sunday to the A.C. reef and had a good day. drift was strong had to use 10-12 ounce and a drift sock. caught fish on every drift, not much junk either, caught about 18 fluke with 10 of them being keepers up to 6 pounds and a couple sea bass here and there. now since i am somewhat new to the area who can help me out with some striper info in the great bay mullica area?

From Capt Mikes 09/09

This week’s fishing reports  has been with mixed results.   The first part of the week was a little slow with the ocean fishing being tough to handle with the rough waters.   Seems that when the drift is cooperating, some nice sized fish are being caught.   Most guys ventured out in the deeper waters 80-90 feet to see nice limit catches.  Just last week both David Brisco and Scott McDonald had some nice catches over on LE Reef.    Those fishing off the reefs such as LE weren’t as lucky this past weekend however.      A/C Reef and Garden State North showed some action with Fluke though.   Nice  Sea Bass are also being picked up around the reefs.   Larger Blues have been running the past week with several 9-15 pounders weighed in.   Some of the bait fish were even forcing these guys up onto the beaches.  Some guys are also bringing in some nice size croakers.   It’s a shame that now that the nice big Fluke are being caught that the party is over tomorrow.    It really has been a pretty decent year and with the nicer weather we’ve had compared to last, it’s a shame they cut our season short.

Bay fishing continues to produce small sea bass, porgies, kingfish, and some blowfish and even heard of a few trigger fish being caught.   Lots of snappers still around also.   Try over by the orange ball or in the clam stakes for these fish.    Word is that the Weakies are showing more of a consistency on the incoming tides.    We have bloodworms in stock now.   Peanut bunker and mullet are around which also make good bait.   Call ahead to see if they are in stock.    Crabbing is a word in our vocabulary that hasn’t had a good reception.   Don’t know what’s up with these guys.   Maybe they’ll come in with a vengeance and we can have some fun before we miss the boat on this fishery.   Keep up to date on what’s happening by visiting our website for weather, fishing reports, photos etc. at Captmikesmarina.com

We we out with a bang and not a wimper. Saturday we had 12 keepers to 22 inches and Sunday it was eveen better with 16 keepers to 22 inches again. We had to sift the hoards of shorts. We must have caught 200 fluke in 2 days. The fish were caught in deeper water a few miles past the reef. Last Wednesday we had a good day with closer to the beach. We 8 keepers to 27inches 6.6lbs.

its a very tuff waterway.. I come out of round a bout creek also, depending on the tide, I work my way to the left side of the stink house then go around it to the inlets... Other times I head towards grassy channel and that that all the way to the inlet...  GPS helps great, but not last year.  Said I was in deep water, but I wound of in 1' of water.. had to be towed out...  they only had to move the boat about 5 feet, so I just missed it...  the only scratches on my lower unit are from that incident...  Its very tricky aroud there..

Fished till my heart was content over the weekend, 5 flounder to 6 lbs in 80 ft. of water, past the LE Reef, Sunday trolled for blues at the BRN & South, had 3 false albies and some blues. Had to work Monday so my fluke season is over.

Now it's time to gear up for the stripers and tog. t^

Weather/winds prevented many fishermen from getting out this week.   Those who got out to the ocean saw some nice picks of Croakers, Sea Bass and Porgies out on the reefs.   Bay fishing has produces smaller porgies, sporadic kingfish, and lots of small sea bass.   Bluefish in the 2 lb. range are all over the bay and inlet areas.   Haven’t seen any big Blues brought in this week at all.   Weakies have been caught along the sod banks, Sheepshead, Marshelder and the Mullica.

Weakies are becoming a more consistent catch lately but still not phenomenal.   We had a few different anglers weigh in some nice trigger fish this week while out king fishing.   Still a lot of small sea bass and snappers around in the bay also.   One customer came into the store and said they had 2 drum fish (one at 9 lb and 6 lb) caught off the shallow waters of the 2nd bridge on Great Bay Blvd.   The ocean has been producing croakers out by the red tower in about 30 ft, and sea bass are being caught in decent quantities and size on the reefs.

www.captmikesmarina.com

This past weekend’s Redmen’s tournament brought in only a handful of Stripers with the winner at about 20+ lbs.   Lots of small bluefish are all over with some bigger ones hanging under the bunker pods, especially out in front of the Red  Tower.  There are lots of pods out there but not a lot of bass under them.   The Mullica was the place to be as far as having any type of chance of catching a Striper.   Eels seem to be the bait of choice.   This is still very hit or miss and by no means a hot fish to be chasing yet.   The water is still pretty warm.  Spoke with several guys up in the Sandy Hook area and they still haven’t turned on with the Striper catch yet so it should be another few weeks to see better action down our way.

The bay for Kingfish and Porgies etc. has slowed down a bit especially since the weather and waters have been slowly starting to cool.   Still a lot of smaller fish out there.

Croakers, 2-4 lb. blues have been consistent out around Wreck Inlet.

With the weather predicting strong rains, winds and seas, the Mica Club postponed their Striper tournament until next weekend. It wasn’t too bad on Friday afternoon while Tim and John were anchored up and chummed with clam. They pulled in two cookie cutter Striper about 30-31”. A few other anglers got out on Saturday and caught some Weakies over in Sheepshead along with some sea bass. Also heard of a few Stripers brought in off the banks of Pebble Beach.
If you get out and brave the elements, you have to definitely put your time in to find something. Water temps are still around 66 degrees but with the cooler air coming in, maybe the postponement of the Mica will reap better benefits for those on the Striper hunt and we’ll start seeing more action in more areas.

Today’s fishing seemed to finally bring those Stripers out of hiding   Despite the atrocious winds and tides the past several days, there were quite a few number of fish weighed in at Scotts Bait & Tackle for the MICA tournament.   Capt.  Tim O’Mara, John Hunt and Jason Lee won first place with total weight of 43.6 lb. and they also won the Calcutta.

Way to go Tim and crew. Fishing in that weather you guys earned it.

still trying to figure out how to post so if I alreday sent this ignore.  But:  Went out twice this weekend.  Friday bottom of tide, rolling seas, no fish boated or seen boated (not too may boats out)  Sunday out at top of tide, boated one bass 37" 17 Lbs and seen a couple others boated. The Fleet was out at all of the usually places and given the size of the fleet, number of fish seemed pretty small.

Herring running pretty good in Batso. The best catches are at night from what I hear.

Catching Keepers off Pebble Beach, no cows yet, but legal. Bloodworms or Sandworms seem to be the bait of preference.

What a beautiful day on the Water today (Saturday).   There were 9 keeper Bluefish caught all before 11 a.m. ranging from 5-7 pounds.   Nice job Geneo.   Mackerel was the bait of choice.

Stripers have been sporadic but they are here.   Hopefully next week should be great with the warmer temps being more consistent at night.

The tog are around so get them while you can.

Boat slips and dry storage spots are still available.   Call or stop by for details.

No signs of striper or blues outside of LEI, no birds doing anything either.
We did hear some chatter of Blues but not much.

The wreck fishing is as good as it can get with no junk fish either t^

Finally got to fish today. After helping a friend out in the morning getting his boat ready and a shake down run with him the A Frayed Sew made her maiden voyage in Great Bay. With a stiff south wind and rain blowing sideways we anchored for an hour or so with some fresh clam bellies. No hits no runs no errors. ::) At least the boat handled the crappy weater flawlessly. Come on Saturday.

Just a hint guys and gals, If you are looking for the birds to help you with finding bait, or are just wondering what is going on well think clams, especially down south along IBSP and LBI.

After the storm on Monday the clam beds got hit pretty hard along the coast many shells have washed up onto the beaches.  If you can locate these beds you should do pretty good as the striped bass are feeding on them right now.

I was out at IBSP yesterday and the majority of fish caught was the striped bass in decent sizes all on clams.

I did not see any birds working at all or see any bait on the surface.  There were plenty of boats at the mouth of Barnegat Inlet and north.  They were clustered over where the beds are located.  If you go out mark in your mind where these boats are and you should do well off the surf in those areas.

Happy Catching

Paul

Thanks for the tip Paul.... Fishing the Surf is a complicated thing to learn. I cannot wait till I figure this stuff out. I did finally pick up a new rod and reel, and my casting distance is much better then it used to be. It is nothing great, but it is 10' and alot easier to use then the ones I have been using. Hopefully it will get things going.

P.S.- I ate the Skate and it was GREAT !!! I will never throw one back again if it is of a decent size. Like I said before...If you can't beat em'...Eat em'

::) .... It stabbed me when I was trying to unhook it, and I got a little bitter and showed it who the boss was with my fillet knife. One of the guys on the pier had a hibachi grill and was doing burgers and dogs, so I got creative. I think it tasted kinda like Blue Claw Crab and a bit like Flounder. It was kinda tricky to skin, but I got the hang of it. It was nice white meat that flaked easily off of the cartilage. All I had to season it with was an Orange that I had brought along for a snack, so I sliced it thin and laid it on top. Wrapped it in tin foil and threw it on the grill for about fifteen minutes. I have two nice size wings in the freezer that I am gonna spice up a bit and have on Memorial Day for any family and friends who are not afraid to try it. Two of the other guys on the pier that day gave it a try and they both are hooked as well. (no pun intended) Anyway, I am kicking myself for all of the skates I have thrown back over the years, and to think that I thought I was getting skunked on all of these trips !!!

You need to knock em out and wing them right away. Get the wings on Ice. I take them home and hose them down right away, cause they slime up reel good as they sit. Skinning them is pretty easy once you get started. I usually use some STRONG kitchen shears and cut they outside edge off up to where the meat is about a half inch thick. This gets rid of those nasty little spikes for the most part. The skin is tough, but once you get it started enough that you can get a hold of the skin with your non-knife holding hand, it is easy to take the skin off of that beautiful white meat. A couple of tips-
1. Use a VERY SHARP fillet knife
2. Don't overcook them unless you like seafood flavored chewing gum.

Google recipes using "Skate wing recipes" as your search words and you will be suprised as to how many recipes you will find. I have been playing with them using everything from Old Bay and Cayenne to Roasted Garlic Butter to BBQ sauce. the recipes you fing on google will help you with cooking time depending on how you choose to go with it. (grill, pan fry, etc.) Let me know if you decide to give it a try, it is truly delicious!!!  t^ t^ t^

Team Basket Case fished the JCAA Fluke Tournament yesterday. We got an early start at 5 AM. We must have caught 65 to 70 fluke with only 7 keepers in 11 hours. Our biggest was 4.81 lbs that was good enough for 7th in the Great Bay port. No one place place was better then the 20 spots we tried. They all produced fish. If the limit was 17 inches we would have limited out by noon time. rgmn

I think so, and I am sure that just like Flounder or any other fish, Once you do it a few times and get the hang of it, it will be easy. The meat is FANTASTIC when cooked for the right time/temp, but I still need to try some more recipes and methods before I zone in on a favorite. It is at least worth a try ! They might be Ugly, but so are flounder ! Tell me your thoughts when you try it, or make some fishing plans with me someday and I will cook it up for you. I have 9 wings left in the freezer right now!  chrz

The Sea Bass bite on Garden State North, LE, and AC Reefs have all slowed down but if determined enough you can still put together a nice catch.

Fluking at mentioned reefs is getting better as the water warms up.

Also check for reports written by Miss Beach Haven, Capt. Dave and myself.

07/02/08  Capt Mikes Marina

Tuckerton Fluke Fishing

Fishing in Great Bay today treated anglers very well. Had the full fleet of rental boats out today and most came back with fish. Some were right on the 18" mark while Orion Millar brought two beautiful 5.4 and 3.61 pound Fluke. Had a few ramp customers have a nice day with one guy bringing in a 5 and 7 lb. Fluke. All fish were caught in front of the Fish Factory and over by the Coast Guard Station.

(http://njsaltwaterfisherman.com/images/Capt_MIkes_Banner.png) (http://captmikesmarina.com)

As a side note. Heard from a friend that there is a huge sandbar spread across by the the inlet over by the Number 2/3 Buoy area in the channel. Please keep an eye out for this as he hit bottom quick and hard today as the tide was dropping. Don't know the exact location but it's in the vicinity mentioned above. Be aware over the upcoming holiday with all the boat traffic.

He thinks hes the fluke king now his picture is up on Mikes home page. He looked at the fluke in the cooler all the way home. When we got home he went to all the neighbors to show them his catch. Broke his heart when it was time to clean his catch up for dinner.

At 5:00 am today I met up with my friend Jerry to do a little back bay fishing.  The wind was blowing pretty good right from the start and only got worse as the day progressed.  Although reports of any decent weakfish catches have been few and far between, Jerry was hoping we could score a few today.

Although we gave it a really good try, we were unable to connect with any keeper weakies.  The best we could do was about an eight inch spike that I snagged in the belly with my bucktail. :-\  We did hook up with several short fluke though.  And Jerry was able to boat at least one nice keeper. t^

As I said before, the wind was a major factor today.  But, by making use of a drift sock and the trolling motor, Jerry did a great job of holding us on our spots so at least we had a shot! TT^

I'm sure we'll have better days. ;D

Hey all, first time on this site and it looks like it has a ton of good info and great folks on it sharing the news.  I won't lurk so I'll throw up my report from this past saturday, 12 July.  Seems like I've been the one boat not getting any keeper fluke (0 for 6 trips) so we tried the kingfish.  Put in about 4 hours of chumming near the clam stakes in Great Bay but only got one small king.  Loads of short flounder, dogfish, skates and sea robins though.  Has anyone done any good sharking in the bay or just outside?  We're not looking for anything special, just some toothy critters to fight and tag for another day.

Welcome Aboard Filthy13,

Glad to have you aboard.  We had a group out last Friday with no luck on the sharking.  We chummed the surf as well and nothing would take the bite.  The surf was loaded with jellies and I was told that they were spawning.  I had at least 15 on the line at one time and I think it was because of the braid because they were a booger getting off where as the guys using mono had no problem at all.  5hrug

I will be going out tonight to IBSP and trying plugs and see what happens.

Again welcome aboard.

Happy catching

Paul

Gents, took the wife and brother out this weekend sharking in the bay and had a great time.  Got 4 and broke off a fifth, and released all of them in good condition.  Nothing to brag about but all were nice, healthy 35-40 lb browns.  The wife got her first sharks ever so she was pretty stoked about that.  Only problem was that its been a while since I used my tagging stick and the thing broke when I tried to tag the first one.  Going to have to get a new one before next trip.  Anybody else do any good this weekend?

Picked up 6 weakies near the brick pile at sunrise this morning. They all were around 12 inches and one was 14 inches We picked them all up in about 20 minutes. Once the boat traffic picked up the bite shut down as usual.

Headed to the LE reef and fished the SE area. A lot of throw backs but we did manage to get three keepers, 18, 21 and 22 inches. All the keepers were taken on large sea robbin strips. The fluke are definately there.

Back at the dock around noon and finished the day with a few VERY cold Boddingtons and a good cigar.

As much as I hate to fish on the weekends, I bite the bullet and took the brother inlaw and my two nephews out today (Sunday). Fished the LE reef again, south east side. We got into a mess of smaller blues (12-13 inches) The kids had a great time. We also picked up 5 keeper fluke and about 20 good size (16 -17 inch) throw backs. The fluke were all taken on sea robin strips.

Back at the dock at 2pm and was enjoying a few VERY cold Boddington and a good cigar while I supervised the clean up crew.   chrz chrz

Actually my drive down is not all that bad even on weekends. I weave my down through the pines and rarely have to deal with more than an occasional car. I just hate to deal with all the boat traffic including the jet skies and the inconsiderate people behind the wheel of a boat.

Heading down to look at a Carolina Classic today, it seems like there are a lot of good deals out there.   ;D

Got out Sat and Sun for some reef fluken. Fished GSS and GSN on Saturday. Caught lots of fluke but only 6keepers to 21 inches. On Sunday I fished a local tournament. We fished LE Reef and Garden State South. Caught about 60 fluke with only 2 for the box. I am glad we entered the searobin part of the tournament. Our by catch netted us 335 bucks. Enough to cover the week ends expenses. chrz

Went down to the boat to clean it up some but as soon as I got down there I saw a couple guys cleaning King fish. I grabbed some clam chum and headed out to the red marker buoy, anchored up and got about a dozen in about 1.5 hours.

Did anyone notice the very attractice blond wearing the thong bikini on Rands pontoon boat? I had to make sure I cleaned the boat well so I was at the dock when she came back in.  :P  So it was a two cigar day as i waited for her to return to the dock.

Capt Ron,
Was out from 6:30 to 2:30 at LER. Tried all over the reef.  Results: Short, short, short, short, short, short, short, dogfish, sea robin, short, short, short, keeper, short, short, short, bluefish. You get the idea. Squid and Killes combo worked better than gulp today.I did hear someone trying to hail you on 9 but never heard you. Next time. If you at Rands I'm just up the road from you off of Great Bay Blvd.

Checked the marine forcast last night and decided it was a good day to stay in the bay. Arrived at Rands at 6AM and head up the Mullica to do some white perch fishing and also hoping to get into some small striper's. We picked up a little of everything, small sea bass, small striper's and some really nice keeper white perch. We kept about 20 perch, one weighting in at 1.5 pounds.

Back at the dock at 1230, a Boddington in hand by 12:45 and of course a good cigar.

Hit LER and NADA. The dragger's were still working the area. So even the shorts are gone now.  Hit my other spot on the way in, three shorts, one keeper.

I think my fluking season is over. I will stay in the bay for kings and head up the river for some white perch just so I can dirty my boat and enjoy the sun.

Back at the dock around 5 pm. Hung out at the dock with some of my buds from the marina. Watched the sunset with a Boddington in one hand and a cigar in the other. Great way to end a GREAT day.

No my boat is still in. I have been working on getting ready for striper season. My zippers on my enclosure all needed to be replaced. They should be done some time this week. I am also shopping for a windless. I am tired of anchoring up near the white water on solo trips and killing myself retrieving the it when it is time to move. Sorry gents, haven't fished in a while, work had me away from home for a while.  I'm looking to head out this Friday for some kingfish with my brother, do you guys have any hot areas right now?  I did get out sharking over in Grassy Channel at the end of August and tagged and released about a 45 lb sandbar shark at night.  There were a bunch of bunker schools also that showed up right at dark so we loaded up on crab bait as well.  I'm with you guys, I usually only get the boat chased out of the water by the ice in December!  Fish til you get numb and then fish some more.

Right now they are getting blues in the pocket as the mullet start their migration.  As soon as they make the turn the blues are all over them.  If you are good on the rocks try going out past pole on the north jetty for what I hear is great fishing.

The jetty is off limits for me, I have to stick to good old tera ferma.

Hit the red ball on Friday and it was a very interesting day.  Burned through the chum and had the slick, the tide, and the wind all going different directions.  Got 4 kings in 4 hours and a bunch of other stuff.  Might try it again this weekend depending on whether or not Tropical Depression 93L turns into a Hurricane and comes North.  Lets hope not!

What a great day....anchored up on the sod banks near Rutgers and really had a field day landing tog. Kept a 3 pounder. Finshed the day drifting live spot in the inlet for striper. Boated my first big striper of the year. Right before dark boated a nice 32 incher. Going out friday afternoon again.

Nice Catch!  I'm heading out to try for kingfish and then take some spots to the inlet also.  I'll let you know how it goes.  I was out earlier this week just poking around and came across some bunker schools with full size adult fish in them.  Anyone tried the snag and drag or fishing them dead in the bay?

Headed out to catch the last of the incoming tide, anchored up on the sod banks, near the old CG station, for some togging. No bite for the first hour, the tide was still ripping through the area. Tide slowed down and the bite was on. Caught over 20 tog from 13.5 to 17 inches. We kept our 2 quota and pulled anchor. Did a few drifts live lining spot but no bites. Bait fish were jumping all over at sunset but no bass for us,  Back at the barn at 7 for a few cold Boddington and cigar.

Against my better judgement headed out on a weekend, as I expected the sod banks were packed with boats. Since I never learned how to parallel park my boat I tried some for some King fish. Got an assortment of Kings, blowfish and spot for some striper fishing later this week.

Watched another sunset from the dock with a Boddington in one hand and a cigar in the other. Nice way to finish the day,

Hey guys, sorry for the late report.  Hit the red ball last Thursday (9 Oct) with the wife for some kingfish at around 1 pm with the incoming tide.  Picked at them for about two hours and then got a bunch at the tide change.  Trish kicked my butt today and ended up with 10 kingfish to my 2.  She'll be impossible to deal with for a while....  All but two were nice ones (we use a self imposed 13 inch limit on the boat for keepers) over 14 inches and the ones we didn't eat that night went into the freezer.  Also got a bunch of spot that we live lined but they got eaten up by the small blues.  I'm out of town till later this month so good luck and keep the reports coming, I'm living vicariously through you guys for the time being.

Fished the MICA Striper Tournament this weekend. With work and the parade TT^ I was only able to fish a day and a half of the 4 day tournament. They say every dog has his day and Saturday was mine. 15 minutes after setting the hook a fat 34.8 pounder came over the rail. 10 minutes later a nice 31 incher followed. The bite died with the change of the tide. Went in at 2PM and weighed the 2 fish in and changed crew members. Caught the end of the out going and got 2 more keepers. One weighed in at 16.2lbs. That one gave us a combined weight of 51 lbs and enough to take 1st place. chrz chrz chrz

Cleared LEI @ 530 am and it was like a lake. Headed North to jig under the birds off Brant Beach. Sun came up and the birds were working hard. Landed so many 8 - 10 pd blues our arms were tired. Landed 5 small stripers that are under the blues. Needed to be back at the dock at 10 so we made one last stop when we saw some more birds working. We were the only boat there and we jigged up 2 Stripers 30 and 34 inchs

Seas were flat, awesome day on the water.

Arrived at the marina at sunrise to catch the incoming tide but we were really socked in with the fog. It was the first time I had to rely on the chartplotter to feel our way around. Tried one of our favorite spots in the bay for about one hour with no luck. Headed to the inlet and anchored up. No sooner did we have lines in the water and the fish were on. Lost two, four shorts, and four keepers (28 to 38 inches)

Fished Wed in close to the beach, by the red tower, and jigged up over thirty shorts. Then headed for deeper water and jigged up a nice 36 incher. Did a slow troll back to the LE inlet and picked up a 34 incher. Back at the dock by 11 am.

Cleared the inlet before sunrise today and worked our way up the beach and marked fish before we hit the red tower. Picked a good fifty shorts between the four of us. Once the fleet arrived the bite slowed and we headed North and to deeper. Switched over and did a troll back South and picked a 30 and 33 on the way back to the inlet. Back at the dock by 1030.

Hopefully fishing Fri and Sat and pull the boat sometime next week.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Took Friday off but we were out way before sunrise Saturday. What an awesome day on the water to finish the season off. Nice gentle swells with a lot of time between them.

Jigged up 3 shorts as soon as the sun came up and then moved to a troll in deeper water. Did nothing on the troll so we headed back to shallow water. Two hours of almost non stop bailing shorts. We did manage two keepers 32 and 34 inches.

Back at the dock at noon and having a burger and beer at the Tuckerton Grille at 1.

Would have been nice to limited out the last day, but it was a great day anyway.

Went 1 for 9 today. Jigging was better then trolling for us. The only keeper was a nice 34 incher. I did see Ron B whooping up on some rats in tight to the beach. ;D I think thats it for me till spring.

GBJ,

I was one of the original boats in tight to the beach when My Mistress made the broadcast. I said to my fishing buddy,"in ten minutes the fleet will be here". I really don't think it took the fleet that long to arrive.

Made the call to get the boat pulled this week. Hopefully I will have a larger boat with a cabin for spring stripers.

Ron

In the spring you don't really need the cabin. ;) I have never really gotten into the spring bunker fishing but plan on learning a lot this spring.

GBJ, I also plan on doing a lot more spring fishing. I have a lot of years to catch up on.

Got down to the dock at 5am and they were all ice covered. We got loaded up and pushed off around 530. As we cleared the inlet and headed towards the Red Tower we spotted a nice bass floating on the top. Netted a nice 34 incher without dropping a line. It was gut hooked and had a jig in mouth. That was the only keeper of the day.   rofla    We did pick a lot of rats up in real close. Back at the dock at 1030 so my fishing buddy could make a 1230 class.  I keep thinking I am going to get that cow.

Going to try Saturday morning and they are definately pulling my boat Sat afternoon. :'(

I been doing some white perch fishing and looking for a new boat. Moving up to a 28 or so, but that also means I am also going to need to relocate to a different marina. Heading to Brick tomorrow to look at a 28 Pursuit.

Don't listen to Rod. They get a nasty algae bloom in that bay every spring and the inlet can be way worse then ours. If you get a bigger boat try Great Bay Marina. It is not a long run to the inlet and they make a mean breakfast. chrz

Looked at a Pursuit yesterday, nice boat. We also looked at a 30 Grady but it was used and abused. Looking at another Pursuit next week,

I am going to stay in the Tuckerton area. All my buds are there and I know the spots now. Probably something on Tuckerton Creek, that will make me real close to the Tuckerton Beach Grille.  :)

To long of a run for those short after work trips in the spring and fall. I like being minutes to the stakes, inlet and Grassy. My buddy had a boat back for 2 years and hated the longer run to the fishing grounds.
Title: Re: Great Bay To Little Egg Reef Fishing Reports
Post by: Capt Ron B on January 10, 2009, 07:02:46 AM
Yes, you are right it is a long run and with that thought in mind I spoke with Rick, the owner of Rands, he is willing to try and accomodate a 28 ft boat. Build longer finger pier etc. He also said if I felt it was not workng out he would refund my money.

My fishing buddy is buying my 21 Mako, so we will have a boat for some back bay areas and a larger one for some offshore wreck fishing.

I have pretty much narrowed it down to Pursuit 2870 Offshore.  It is a pretty cool layout, all the advantages of a CC with some cabin space and a real head to make the females happy. The real head will make me happy also on those cold Nov/Dec Striper Days

I have a Garmin now.  I wanted to go a little bigger and the LCX-28 has a 7" screen and fits my budget (or lack of budget). It is amazing the price jump when you go over a 5" screen.

I appreciate the offers and even when I get a boat I think I will take you up on your offers. It is ways nice to make new friends and fish other waters.

The guy who did purchase my boat happens to be the kid I fish with all the time, so I am not without a boat to jump on. The game plan was for him to have the Mako for the close inshore work and for me to go larger for some offshore wreck and occassional tuna run. Oh yeah and to have a cabin for those cold ass Nov and Dec Striper days.

Thanks again for all the offers

Yup, still looking. A lot of good deals but the exact boat I want has eluded me. I really don't want to compromise on anything. Some where, some place that 2870 Pursuit has my name on it.

What I am finding is that a lot of owners owe more than their boat is worth in todays market, and they just don't want to settle for less. I was dealing with a guy that owed 10k more on the boat then todays market says it is worth and I was offering. He did not have the money to pay the 10k to the bank, so he continues to pay his monthly payment that he can barely afford. He was / is really between a rock and a hard place.I felt bad for the guy but not enough to overpay for the boat. I should start a thread on my boat purchasing experience and its frustrations.

I am working with a great broker though and he makes it a little easier. I am just not going to settle for less than I have my heart set on or over pay for a boat.

Finally a fishing report.

I got some striper fishing in this past week. Picked up my first keeper on Tuesday (32") and a mess of shorts. It was great just to be fishing again.

Thursday I went up the Mulica River with my friend to his "secret" spot and had a lot of fun catching white perch. Everytime we dropped the line we had fish. Fished for a little over one hour, caught over 75, kept 20 for dinner. Made for a nice good Friday dinner.

Boat update! Looked at a 2870 Pursuit Friday, put a deposit down and waiting to see if they accept my offer.

Put the boat in late Friday night. Saturday went down but bailed with the fog and blow out tides. Sunday we did a shake down run/fishing trip. The weather was less then steller. WE anchored in a few spots and fed the doggies. 20 big sand sharks 1 spider crab and 1 horseshoe crab is all we could muster. I cant wait for Saturday to do some fluking.

Yesterdays report.

Fished the bay late this afternoon. The weatherman was a lier again. The wi*& was blowing pretty stiff out of the south AGAIN! Got a nice 19 inch fluke on the first drift and that was it. First time this year I did not get any shorts. At about 7 PM the birds started working on the flat near the stakes. Cocktail blues were feeding on spearing. Loaded up on some blues for some beer battered bluefish tomorrow night.

thank you to the people that welcomed me to the site. now i am gonna ask some advice of the great bayers out there: i'm new to great bay, have some family in mystic, came up from southern nj in search of a different type of fishing.(those who have fished the southern waters will understand) I'm trying to find a "shortcut" if you will from the mullica to the stink house without having to follow the channel markers on the northern part of the bay. Followed a few through on sunday with a low tide and no problems except i don't own an accurate plotter, yet, or i would have marked it, i know the channels are pretty tight. so any hints or help i can get i would greatly appreciate the little bit of time and gas savings.
I find when taking shortcuts the GPS is pricelss. I run around at dead low and plot what little channel is there and then run em at any tide following my marks. Even a $90 portable in a bracket on the dash works fine.
Anyway for a report I ran out to the wreck bouy figuring I would hit the motherload and didnt catch a single fluke. I did mange a 22 and 25 when I got back inside.

Fished the Friday and Saturday. Had 3 keepers on Friday but would have had 4 do to the lack of a net man. Left around 5 when the fog got real thick and I was the only fool out there. Saturday  we got 6 keepers with me being the high hook w/ 5 keepers. I will be giving it a try again tomorrow if the East Winds are not to bad.

Finally got out today. ;D  Fished Little Egg Reef. First drift 3 fluke, one keeper 19".  Not to shabby a start. Swell was a little large at first but flattened out nicely. Kille-Squid-Fluke Bale combo. Then my 11 year great nephew started to turn green so we ran next to beach and picked at little cocktail blues until he couldn’t take that any longer. All in all an enjoyable day.

Wreckfish....I did see your boat in the lagoon. What are the cliff notes on why just putting in?

Fished this past Friday, Saturday and Sunday as a tune-up for the upcoming Fluke-A-Thon.  Had about 75 Fluke over the three days and only three keepers, 19, 19 and 20 inchers. Not much of the tune up.  Caught Countless ¾ Lbs blues, Seabass and even a 3 ½ ft. small shark. I think it was an Atlantic Sharpnose shark by the white spots.  Not an expert, only going by some picture I saw.  Used the standards bait, Squid, Killies, Bluefish strips, Sea robin fillets. All produces about the same.  Fished the Red Tower, Little Egg and Garden State South Reef and some other fishy looking spots.

Do you have any days off during the week or just weekends now that vacation season is over?

I got down around 8 and my friend and I decided to go breakfast instead. We eventually changed our plans and anchored up in the clam stakes and chummed for king fish. We put 4 hours in and got 4 kings.

Headed down this morning with my BIL. By the time we  hit the GSP exit it was drizzing and the flags were standing straight out.

Bagged it and got breakfast, checked out some waterfowl hunting areas and looked at guns at Tip's HW.

Decided to hit the PP canal on the way home. Got a few togs and sea bass on clams even though the tide was ripping. Fun on lite spinning rods.

Got down Sunday afternoon to catch the last of the incoming..anchored along the sod banks for some tog fishing..we got a bunch of short and one that was 14 inches. It wasn't all that productive but it was fun being out on the water.

Sea trialed the Regulator Friday...I was very impressed. The Capt got it up to about 50 mph and just cut the wheel as hard as he could. I just held on and thought "Oh crap". the boat just turned as nice as could be, no stern slide at all. Everytime I get on it I am more impressed. They just need to replace the washdown pump and we are good to go.

Looks like is new home will be Great Bay Marina.

Got down around 2PM (Wed) and tried to get some Tog fishing in along the sod banks. We played around and played around but the combination of the wind, fast running tide and all the weed made for a impossible day. No fish, not even a bite. We gave up and hit the Tuckerton Grille for burgers and beers.

Got a text message from Wreckfish while out there asking me to do a seabass run today. I assumed he was just taking advantage of the 1 foot seas predicted for today but then he told me that sea bass was shutting down on Monday. That really sucks. Took delivery of my Regulator on wed also and I am thinking I might as well just put it right to bed and forget about paying for a slip, etc. Oh well, we really need to do something about OUR fisheries. They are ramming this stuff down our throats.

Wreckfish, sorry I could not join you today. Let us know how you made out.

Well, my boss has been in a foul mood all week, seabass is shutting down on Monday and the wife is, let just say status quo 5hrug.......... couldn't think of a better time to go fishing.  Couldn't find anyone to go with me on short notice so I shot out to LE reef by myself this morning.  It was a little more choppy then I thought it would be but not to bad.  After a little poking around found a nice spot that lit up my fish finder.  The fishing we drop and reel.  Double headers on most reel ups. OK most were shorts but it is alway fun to catch lots of fish. Ended up with 14 keeper Cbass, 2 triggers and I picked 5 crocker on the way in. Fresh clam and hi-low rig - keep it simple.  Wind stared to pick up in the afternoon. Back to work tomorrow.

No, we got down right after the storm and was back in early enough to miss the afternoon showers.

Spent today (Sunday)exploring the Mullica. Had a great day with white perch. Filled a decent size cooler. We also landed 5 stripers all in the 20 to 24 inch range. It was so much fun fightening them on very light tackle. I cannot wait till the big ones are here. I heard there was a big bass caught of LBI today.

I can't help you much with trolling spoons. We only did it a few times, but it was with braid, and was not successful. We mostly jigged and were on the hook with clam.

Yesterday (Wed) we were on the hook in LEI at 530pm and stayed till 1030pm and nothing to report. A smart person would have went back in and headed to the Tuckerton Grille for their burger special. :)   gonna try again Saturday with a 1000 other boats.

Fished the LEI white water in my friends boat today. Four in the box, 34 to 40 inches, and lost five. Great to be on the Stripers again.

Rick, were you out there on Sunday when that Steigercraft flipped? Reading about that and the boat that went down in Del Bay last Friday has me wear my PFD in that damn white water.

Very nice Ron. We had a great weekend also. I fished Thursday through Sunday. We had 17 keepers in that 4 day stretch with only 3 throw backs. Like you said the majarity of the fish were in that 35 to 38 inch range. Now I am home sick with bronchistis w/ a 101 fever. Hopefully with the meds and rest I can do it again later this wwek.

Hope you feel better and get out and bail em again
I heard a lot of the chatter on the radio and been following things on the BB. I could not get away for the 4 days to fish the MICA. I was content to get out the one day and limit out and head home.

I hope to get out this Thursday morning and load up again.

Caught the last of the incoming tide and picked up a 28 inch and a 44 inch, 31 pounder in the white water of LEI. Started to pick up dogfish with the slack tide. Tried inside for a short period of time and nada. Tried to catch some of the outgoing, on the south side of LEI, but we ran out of time before my fishing buddy had to be back for class. Back at the dock at 1pm, cleaned some fish and had my Boddington and a cigar.

Stopped by and finally met Phil (Wreckfish) and we had a beer while I watched him clean his boat. :)  Nice finally meeting you Phil

Late weekend report. Fished Saturday in the afternoon and it was like fishing in Chocolate milk but the fish did not mind. We had 7 fish total with 5 keepers. All fish were 31 to 33 inches. Sunday we had 6 keepers but 5 were smaller 28 to 29 inches and one that was about 37 inches. Not bad for after the big storm. Will be out tomorrow in the afternoon. The bite was really good Monday and Tuesday so hope it continues.

Sunday report....left the dock at 730 and decided against hitting the white water due to the forecast. We found a nice spot away from the inlet fleet and waited and waited for a hookup. We were skunked until around 11am when we had four in the boat within 45 minutes..Smallest was 30 inches, largest 40 inches. Back at the dock at noon with my Boddington and cigar. I cannot wait to start jigging, but right now the clam is still working well.

Left the dock at 630 and wanted to hit the white water for the outgoing tide but we didn't want to take the chance with the fog. Stayed in the back area and picked up two nice ones, 33 and 36 inches. Once the fog lifted we tried the last of the outgoing in the white water, nada, nothing. Headed back in to catch the incoming tide. We had to pull anchor no later than noon. At 1130 we got a nice hookup and I boated my first 40+ incher, 44 inches, 32 pds to be exact. This fish was fat. He had a whole bunker and most of the clam we had been chumming with in his stomach.

Had a few Boddington and a cigar to celebrate the day. chrz

Well ran the first trip of the season today for stripers with Chris Gladd and Jack Walters.  We got to our spot with about and hour before high tide and had wind against the tide but once the tide went slack we had our first fish of the season at 26”.  Tide started to run out and for the next several hours we had several hits but could not get them to take the hook.  Around 2pm it was game when Jack had a great strike and missed it and Chris had one at the same time and landed the fish. First keeper of the year was a 29”.  The we set the lines out again and within 15 mins. Chris was on again with a nice 33”.  Jack also land a 14” Catfish.  Ended that day with two fish for the guys to take home for dinner.  With the warm weather the bit should be on.

4/3/10
Ran out today with George, Chris Gladd, and Chris’s sister and boy friend.  Left the dock in the fog and made our way over to Great bay.  Pick a spot and got set up for the incoming tide.  Water temp was 52 to 54.  Had several hits and with in about and hour had our first hook up and bragging right went to the the young guns on the boat.  First fish came over the rail and went in the box at 29”.  Had several more misses and then the young guns did it again with a small fish and it was Chris’s sister first striper.  A kiss and back it went in.  Once again Chris was doing alot of swing and misses and it happen again.  The young guns had another hook up and this was going to be a nicer fish it made several runs and then was in the net and was 33”.  Ended the day with two in the box.

I caught nothing with 8" live eels and my father pulled up 2 12" wide stingrays on squid.

oh well

Been awhile since anyone posted here. So I thought I'd share my day. Had a very dear friend of mine call and ask if I could take him and his son fishing. He was just diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Now he is trying to spend as much time with his son as possible. The week before the wife and I where right on the side of the fish factory catching blues at will. Knowing they were still around, I picked up Jimmy and his son and took off. Hit the water about 9:30 and took a drive around, looking for a spot with not to many boats and fish. Easier said than done!  Ended up just inside the mouth of the mullica. There is a nice little hole there about 30ft. deep and there wasn't to many boats around perfect!  Anchored up chum pot out and than a quick leason to a 13 year old on casting. We were ready. Cast 1 a little rough, cast 2  half way back to the boat a 12lb blue tried to rip the rod out of the boy's hands. For the next hour and a half it was all the blues they could handle. The better part of my day was spent unhooking fish, and loving it. Than with boats moving in and a few trolling through. We packed up and headed in. On the way back watched a boy with one of the biggest smiles I ever seen bragging he caught the biggest fish.  Back to the dock, packed up and headed home. 5mins into the ride kid sleeping on the back seat, 15mins later dad out cold and me driving along. Thinking out of every trip I've ever been on this was my best trip of my life. And I  didn't caught squat. Already made plans for a fluke trip next month. Hopefully I'll have another great trip of unhooking fish.

Went out again Saturday to play with the blues in the bay. Got out on the water about 10am. Took a little ride around looking for a good spot. Ended up a little south of fish island in the icw by the 140 buoy.  Being a firm believer in chumming. Threw over the chum bag and a menhaden oil drip. Went with a 6" gold and black bomber and my buddy went with a blue and clear bomber. Within a few minutes they were hitting both lures every second or third cast.  A faster retrieve with a twitch worked best.  Lost count of the fish boated. It was around 3 dozen. After about 2hrs the bite started to die. So pulled anchor and headed in for a beer. Thought about going out today too but wound up having a little more than just one beer.

Got the boat out Saturday for a quick shake down cruise. Drove around for a bit everything ran great.  clp couldn't be out there without getting a line wet. So went after the blues. Looked around not much going on with them in the bay Saturday. So ran up into the Mullica  by the parkway bridge, for a little warmer water. There they where. Caught 15 in just over a hour. Biggest being 36" and right at 20lb. Water being a little colder chunk bite worked best. kept 7 for shark bait in a couple months. The rest went back in to fight another day.
