Title: NJ Fishing Locations, North Pier Seaside Heights
Post by: ped579 on July 31, 2007, 11:57:35 PM
Hi All,

Well continuing south my next stop was the North pier in Seaside Heights, which are actually 2 piers one that T's off and one streight.  Both have plenty of fishing room for fishing or crabbing.

The location is on the south side of Rt. 35 just before the Rt. 37 ramp going west.  The dock, parking, beach & playground are all free.

There are boat rentals available from 16' row boats to 18' motor boats through Seabreezt Boats.  They also have bait tackle ice and crabbing supplies available.

Right now crabbing is the thing but I have caught everything from crabs, fluke, weakies, blues and pretty soon snappers will be grabbing everything in site.

Give these piers a shot, I have to warn you though they do get crowded on the weekends so go early to get a good spot.

Hi Rod,

I might try that soon.  I will have to bring along the tripod or another body though.

It should be fun especially kids.

I talked to a lot of people today and I have to say everyone was eager to talk about technique and strategies.  Especially Bill at Seabreez Boats (sorry if I got your name wrong).  I used to work with the owners son at the Ocean County Office of Emergency Management a few years ago.

Happy Catching

Thanks for the report Paul. I love the pictures and will let Steve know how well this looks on your site. I worked the weekend of August 10 to August 12 at the "Boats". We had record numbers of folks crabbing and fishing so the pressure is pretty strong on the area,The crabbing seems to be best a little south of the Mathis and Tunney bridges as well as the north side of the Pelican Island connector along the outside of the bulkheads. I recommended the "catfood in the trap" technique to some unlucky crabbers and they had a good hit that day with 15 big crabs in the bucket by the end of the day.If you open the can of food just a little and slip the baithook through the ring of the can it seems to be an effective chumming method. The neat thing is the crabs come looking for you instead of you looking for the crabs! Some tide tips. Slack and ebb tides the crabbing slows considerably  because the currents do not carry the chum slick effectively. Plan crabbing during the times that tides are moving toward high or toward low.For the area of Seaside Heights on the Bayside add about 5 hours to whatever the beach tides at the ocean are because it takes time for the water reach this part of the bay from the Barnegat and Manasquan inlets. Bunker and chicken are effective baits but it is really the skin of the chicken that attracts crabs because of the oil slick it puts off. Please don't discard old bait in the water. If you have bait you want to get rid of just leave it on the beach and the gulls will effectively and ravenously process it in 25 seconds or less. It is kind of like Jurassic Park except on a smaller scale!

Great report Bill,

Thanks for the information.  I am sure with your tips the crab population will be a few less by weeks end.

Again thanks for a great p[ost.

Hi All,

I noticed that there was some life on the pier today and yesterday.  Don't know if they were catc`hing I went by to fast and before ti registerded I was by the area.

There is a new fence around the parking area now.  The town is doing a great job I think they are either repaving or putting new lines there but it should be a good place to fish and crab this season.

Good Luck

Happy Catching

That would be a blast.  If someone could run my camera it would be interesting to do a few pilot clips.

Went by there yesterday and the town repaved that section of the parking lot looks real nice.  The lot should be filled real soon with crabbers and families looking for a place to escape.

Happy Catching.

I've been going to this place for years for crabbing. I don't live in near Seaside, so its about a 90 minute drive and I only go there a handful of times per year. Its always a blast though. I never fished too much here but will give it a try when I make my first visit of the season this July. I've seen people mostly pull snappers typically; anything else here?

Its most productive time of year is early fall for fishing.  Otherwise it is great for crabbing.  There is a new concession stand there now Stewart's.  So enjoy it when your here in July.

Happy Catching
