Title: Do you know how to use your EPIRB?
Post by: NJSeaGrant on September 07, 2012, 01:40:30 PM
Knowing the proper way to use your Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) can save your life.  Use the following tips from the US Coast Guard to make the most of your EPIRB in an emergency:

-Make sure the EPIRB is floating in the water
-Secure the EPIRB to your liferaft or vessel with its lanyard or another line
-Keep the activated EPIRB away from any metal structures (railings, hull, masts, etc.) that can block its signal
-Keep the EPIRB floating in the water for the best chance of being found- EPIRBs do not need to be high out of the water for the signal to be detected.

For more information, check out the Coast Guard Compass (http://coastguard.dodlive.mil/2011/05/whats-an-epirb/) website.

Good info! EPIRBs are registered to a vessel and are great in an emergency. Many PLBs use the same technology and are small enough to be kept on a person at all times. This is useful if someone falls overboard or the boat accident happens too quickly to access the EPRIB. Here is an article about PLBs.
