Title: alternative fluke bait
Post by: Reel Time on April 09, 2007, 07:19:32 PM
i have seen the old timers get to the head boat early and fish for the little cocktail blues. i even asked one day, and one admitted to them being his secret bait. he did wind up with pretty decent fluke, dont think he got the pool winner, but they definently produced.

Hi Reel Time,

Any live bait  works great including shiners (if you can keep them alive).

I use snappers in late July/August.

Never leave the dock without killies (even for dolphin or tuna).

Best wishes,

Capt. Ed

Fluke will take anything, but there is only one secret bait, but it's not a secret any more.  Fluke will hit any fresh bait, but the Gulp baits out fished live peanut bunker, squid, spearing, and killies 8-1.  I was shocked myself.  This year I will try the Gulp sand eel for Fluke.  It looks like it will work well.  I will keep you updated..

I have a buddy that owns a bait shop up here in Pa and he keeps all his dead minnows from his tanks and freezes them. Last year we took a 5# ball of frozen minnow and did real good on the fluke.

False albacore belly strips make a deadly fluke bait.

As previously mentioned GULP and mantis shrimp are also highly effective.

I had great success with the mullet.  I wish they made the a little bigger.  I already order the sand eel, which should work great.  How are the porgy's.  Do the fluke take them as much as the mullet.

I like the Pogy's better than the mullets and they now make 4" swim Mullets..
