Title: Halibut Techniques for Fluke

I love fishing for fluke in New Jersey. We typically drift fish with bucktails and gulp on a teaser.

I recently worked as a charter captain in Alaska for two seasons and think halibut techniques would work well for larger fluke.

Does anyone anchor up and put lots of scented baits down? In Alaska, a good scent trail can bring in halibut from miles away, similar to chum when shark fishing.  

I think using lots of squid, bonito, or bunker would do the trick.

While I don't know anything about halibut fishing I will say that larger fluke are very lazy when compared to smaller fluke. I personally don't think a chum slick would attract big ones from a large radius. I think you're asking for a variety of trash fish to come your way more than anything.

I do think anchoring up is a great strategy to catch bigger fluke. It's better to have no drift than too much. Park yourself over a spot that you're content has bigger fish and fish both sides of the tide patiently. A wreck, small piece of structure, a specific drop off, etc. I'm actually surprised more private boats don't try this out more often when culling for quality.

Thanks, for the SEO tips Hotrod! Fisherman120 you make some good points. We actually keep the baits about 10 feet from the bottom when halibut fishing, this makes it so we catch less rockfish or skates and does not affect the catch rates much for halibut and lingcod. I will have to go fluke fishing next summer and see if fluke feed based on scent as much as halibut do.
