"Gadus Morhua" Enough Said

The Cod Father

Return of the cod to Montauk’s Block Island waters.
The famous Viking Fleet from Montauk is filling coolers and selling out weekly. Cod fishing has returned and to veteran anglers it is the best in fishing since the 1950’s.

The Viking fleet has been in the thick of cod since February 1 .Twenty four hour trips that have been pulling double headers on bait and jigs over the rails. On one trip, the Viking Superstar caught so many cod that anglers went into survival mode and were in T-shirts so they wouldn’t sweat and playing catch and release with double headers. Pool winners have ranged from 17 to 25 lbs. and most anglers have been bagging double-digit catches. Bait and jigging different times of the day have both been successful.

If you are planning a road trip to Montauk, be prepared and call in your reservations in advance. . The Viking fleet is sailing every Saturday and Sundays at 3am and mid week Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Cost is set at$100 per angler bait included.

If you do not want to drive to Montauk, give our local Capt Jimmy Elliot a call for reservations.
Captain Jimmy is sailing due east with the Miss Belmar Princess on 24 hour trips in search of a record cod.

Despite strong gale force winds Miss Belmar Princess and her crew found what they were looking for this week .Anglers landed over 300 fish up to 30 lbs despite wind gusts up to 40 mph. Determined and ready for anything Miss Belmar Princess and crew are a sure bet.

Did You Know?

The Atlantic codfish can weigh from 10 to 25 lbs but there have been record cod weighing up to 200 lbs.
Cod is a staple fish in the seafood market. The fillets are white and have a low fat content .Cod is commonly used in the popular fast food menus as fish and chips. Smaller cod and similar fish are commonly mislabeled as scrod and vice versa, Cod liver oil is a big part of the market as well.

Thanks for that report Ron.  What is the saying as goes the cod so does the rest of the fish.  Maybe this year will be a banner year for most species.  I can't wait to get out and try some new stuff I picked up over the winter.

Plus try out some new teasers I tired as well.

Thanks again.

Happy Catching

Paul
