Tastee outing 5/18
« on: May 18, 2009, 08:35:12 PM »
Fished with Donnie and big Don today out of Keyport. Let me preface this with that it was not a knock out day but never the less Donnie had an agenda and was sticking with it.  The kid is locked in and on a mission.  Sunday we discussed the approach and his plan unfolded like a copy of the Wall Street Journal on a crowded NJ Transit train.  The wind blowin out of the N/NW was not ideal. So, we buzzed through the bay to search for the bunks.  The new nylon he got this season has already gotten good use and was going dunking again today.  First net produced a single.  But, a short unassisted drift into the mother load produced (4) 5 gallon pails full of bait. cfzd  It took two of us to hump the livies over the rail to the deck while Big D kept eye on the depth finder and shoreline.  Not bad for 10 minutes work!

Moved to a couple of his fav locations and the first drop produced a nice 34" by the Capt.  We figured it would be a drop and reel day.  The stripes had a different mindset.  We drifted and livelined for a good part of the morning with little cooperation from the linesiders.  There were plenty of marks on the finder.  So, what was up?  Moved out near the western reach by the anchorage and watched a couple of other boats bend rods.  We worked for the fish today.  No touches here for us.  The tide finally changed and began to pour in.  We moved back to our original drop.  Decided to put the guillotine to a couple of bunks and that seemed to do the trick for me.  Had two fish 27 and 27.5" that were returned.  Big Don switches over to a head and he's on.  A good fish makes a run.  His penn is peeling line.  With the patience of a Kung Fu master he pays out line, points the tip, engages the lever drag and cranks the rod to the heavens.  This fish had it's eyes crossed for sure!  A nice little battle ensues.  A couple of runs make for an interesting tango.  Big D is rewarded with a nice fish that just eeks out his sons fish at 34.5 and beat him by 2 lbs.  18 vs 16 lbs.

We called it a day shortly there after. We went 4 for 4 and put two fish in the box.  Not a banner but you've got love it when a plan comes together.

To you  chrz Donnie and Big D.  As usual... a very good time.  Thanks for the bread and the Beam  ;)

Crankin in the first one...

Good job Tastee.  Donny has a vendetta against the stripers this year and he's out to win.  Good day on the water.  Look's like it was a little chilly?  Nothing a little Bread & Beam can't cure. chrz  T-Bone
