Openning Day Navesink River Fluke Report
« on: May 23, 2009, 05:00:09 PM »
Decided to do something a little different today, so Jason & I rented a skiff from a the Oceanic Marina.

Early on we had ideal conditions with just enough easterly wind coupled with the end of the incoming tide. As the day wore on the wind picked and the tide turned to create less than ideal conditions.

We either fished a killie with a chartreuse GULP swimming minnow or a 1 ounce white SPRO also tipped with a GULP.

Action was best described as a pick. I landed 6 fluke with 1 just making keeper status. I also lost what felt like a very good fish. Was bouncing the Spro and it just was stopped dead in it's tracks. Felt a few head shakes but couldn't get it off the bottom. It pulled some drag and gave a few more shakes. Finally was able to get 2-3 turns on the reel before it became unbuttoned. Jason landed 4 fluke and 1 monster sea robin.

Most of the other boats in the area seemed to be doing about the same. Only saw 2 other fish that were definite keepers.

PS: Allen, that rig/hook we talked about worked like a charm with either a 2 or 3" GULP shrimp.

We were done by 12:45. A buddy of mine was also fishing the same area from a skiff. He had only 1 keeper of 18.5"s when we left but add two more of 20 & 22.5 later in the afternoon.

I enjoyed it so much that I'm thinking of doing it again tomorrow (Monday) instead of doing a live lining trip. Also considering doing it again next Sunday.
