6/20 Fluke Trip Raritan Bay....Bad JU-JU
« on: June 20, 2009, 09:19:39 PM »
I decided to take out a last minute charter today...which happens to be our 5th wedding anniversary....i knew it would be a bad call from the get go for that reason alone but had no clue just how bad the day would end....
anyway, decided to run to the back today...14 reach, keyport bouy, keansburg hole...all shorts and not alot of action.....the weather held out until 9:30 am when the skies opened up and poured down on us for the next 3 hours...headed east to the terminal channel where we finally boxed some nice flatties to 21 inches. Then the southeast wind started and we got wind against tide.I try my best for the charters and decided to give it one more shot at the tc. This proved to be a bad decision as i am running at 1900 rpm (slow and steady) and the boat bucks backwards and then starts to vibrate....i look in the prop wash and see a large object come up and then go back under the surface never to return back to the top. Couldnt even really identify how big or what it actually was. Needless to say, ran back in on my stbd engine as i bent my port wheel and hopefully not my shaft.Haulin her out wed to check it out and hopefully have it machined and back in water same day.
Spoke to Capt. Bob and he agrees there is just a ton of crap that isnt visible on the surface at all...submerged wood and trap floats....running easy wont stop it either....just be careful out there guys!!!!!
P.S.  BAD JU-JU GOING OUT ON THE ANNIVERSARIES....I WOULD RECOMMEND AGAINST IT! rgmn rgmn rgmn rgmn rgmn rgmn rgmn thud

Sorry to hear about the BAD JU JU Capt Carl.
Way too much sh$t in the water and it never gets any better. It like playing dodge ball with that stuff.
You tuffed it out for you charter. t^

Great effort on betting your crew on the fish.

Tuff break on hitting the USFO (Unknown Semi-Floating Object) I have done that twice in the past six or so years. The last time it tore my lower unit up. First time it was an oxygen tank  cfzd that only the turn off valve was out of the water. No damage that time but thought I hit a sub with the noise that it made banging and scrapping against the hull.  nosmly
