7/12 - Rough Day
« on: July 13, 2009, 07:57:19 PM »
Headed out Sun morn with co-worker Al on his boat. We decided not to run offshore for sharking because of the forecast, so we stayed inshore and tried for fluke/seabass.

Rounded the hook and made our way to the Sandy Hook Reef while stopping on a few marks on the way. Found a really nice ridge off the Highlands Bridge but had no action. At the reef we couldnt hold bottom with 10ozs on so we moved in and held better. Still no takers and a 2mph S drift. Ran to the rocks and the rattlesnake when the wind settled down we finally got a decent drift but still no takers. Lots of lost rigs though...  5hrug

While motoring around looking for anything,  we came upon a few bunker pods and snagged and livelined them. They looked like they were being fed on, crashing the surface but still had no takers. A school of Dolphins came up right next to the boat to check in on us.

Later on more drifts produced one short seabass for me. That was it, frusturation set in and so did the wind so we headed in. Rounded the hook to meet a stiff W wind and 3-4 footers. cfzd Tooki it easy and the closer we got to home, the more it laid down. Stopped on some bluefish action on the way in just for fun and a reminder we still know how to catch fish. Could've been worse.

Bill , Nice report. You gave it a shot and thats what counts big.
I was at the Reef on Saturday with big a$$ swells(looked like a wall of water)  and landed sea  bass and fluke.  cfzd     t^

Great effort. It has been tough putting together any kind of catch lately. The no drift in the morning and too swift of a drift in the afternoon certainly does not help the catching.  :P
