Bones & Albies Trip 9/15/09
« on: September 15, 2009, 03:23:14 PM »
Headed up to Point Pleasant this morning to get aboard the Queen Mary for one of their special bonito and albacore trips.  It's something I look forward to doing every year, as I love to jig up these little speedsters! ;D

It was a beautiful morning as we left the inlet a little past 6:30am and headed due east.  It was not a long ride out to the first stop where we managed to pick a few fish.  After a solid try there, the Captain moved out a bit further to where we found a better bite.

It was not lights out fishing by any means, but we had a decent pick of a few fish here and a few there.  The weather cooperated nicely all day as well.  Towards the latter third of the trip, the fishing improved to where it went from one fish on to three or four drag screamers on at a time! w0w

There were a lot of fat alberts and very few bonito (about six) caught today.  Some folks bait fished, but most jigged.  I jigged all day and was high hook with 14 albacore up to 10 lbs.

I also met a bunch of nice folks on the boat today.  All good people with some great senses of humor.  Jokes and comments were flying back and forth all day.  We all had a lot of laughs! ;D

What a blast!  If you've never done a trip like this, you're missing out.  These little tuna are just flat out "test your tackle" fun!  t^

P-man, they fight a lot differently than bluefish.  These fish make long runs and, on light tackle, can really test your drag system.

The bite never got that red hot to where I felt like they would have hit a topwater.  I had to work for them a bit.  The Tsunami jigs were working for me today and I had a hard time tying anything else on.  I guess I should have made a few casts with a spook, but I never did. 5hrug

LOL Gymrat! ;D  It was definitely a major upgrade from the skunk we got last year! t^

Mike, here's some stock pics of a couple of "Spooks".

They have a "walk the dog" action, similar to to a pencil popper.  You can tie direct to the line tie, or use a snap or split ring.
