10/3 PPB Surf Report
« on: October 05, 2009, 08:17:01 AM »
Fished dusk and dawn on Saturday and Sunday along the south end of PPB. The surf was loaded with bait (sand eels) all weekend and although I no stripers to report, we had constant action on weakfish and shad, with the occasional fluke.  I took my 14 year old son for his first time surf fishing and I think he may be hooked.  He had a least a dozen weaks each time & asked when we are going again. The boats were stacked just outside the inlet on Sunday and south along the beach.  All in all we C&R'd over 20 each session.  We fished metals with a teaser, and most hookups were on the teaser.

Happy fishing, Joe

Nice job!  Your son is definitely hooked...it is always nice to catch like that on your first trip.  Just hope he won't be disappointed now on those days the action is s  l  o  w ;D. Nice to see weakies in the surf.  What type of metal were you getting them on?

Yeah, I know, the challenge will be to keep him excited after he gets skunked a few times.
We both used a yellow teaser and 1 to 2 oz AVA, both green and yellow tubes were equally effective.  The weakies/shad where hitting not far from the shore line, no more than 20 yards out.  I switched a number of times with surface lures (Bomber, and a few poppers)to see what was biting but a slow retrieve on the bottom with the metals was the ticket.

Early mornings fished better than dusk. Birds were working harder and there appeared to be much more bait in the water. We often brought in sand eels fowl-hooked on the metals. We fished 6-9:30am and 4-7pm.

well guys, the bait is still there but the fish aren't. I fished from 5-7 this evening and didn't see one catch between the 30 so people I saw out there.

Good sign of things to come ;D
