[Luna Sea 4]

My weekly crew member and co-worker Mattie had a great time with me with the stripers this spring, with his largest going 36".

On Tuesday, his cousin was fishing off IBSP and landed a 45" and 37 lbs striper caught on a bunker head.  

Now Mattie wants to beat him with a larger fish.. But I told him to wait till fall, I want Fluke now.. lol..

If that 37lber was from the surf, your buddy's gonna have to beat him with a surf caught fish.  Boat fish don't count.

Well, I beg to differ with that one.  I am a boater, but I tried the surf thing.  Without a doubt, the surf isn't easier, but it is more relaxing, thats for sure..

Most might say the surf is more rewarding, but I don't believe that either.  Both the boater and surf caster have to use different techniques to capture their goal, no one is more rewarding then the other when you catch a trophy fish. A trophy is a trophy..

Surf is harder, no doubt.  

4WD, cell phones and the internet have all made it somewhat easier than when I used to frequent the surf as a walk-on angler.

Easier no way...When was the last time you ever heard of a surf fisherman using a fish finder to locate bait or fish?  You have to put in many hours to be able to see certain signs that MIGHT lead you to fish, but if you do not know what to look for your just playing the waiting game.  It is like Russian roulette you cast and hope something swims by to take your bait or lure.

You have to really love the sport to stick with surf fishing.  Getting up at 3:30 to get the buggie ready.  Load up poles, stop off and get bait, ice and what ever else you need from the B&T.  Get to the beach air down the tires, unsecure poles, put on waders, get ready to roll onto the sand.

While your driving on the beach you are constantly looking for signs of life that are close enough to the beach for you to cast to.  Once you find a location you bait up and cast out and with any luck you can be rewarded to a nice fish at the other end.

If nothing is around you pick up and move everything to another location.  Repeat this again and again till either you are loaded with fish or you just simply call it a day.

Once you roll off the beach there is the run to refill your tires with air and once back home rinse off the buggie and gear and stow everything away till the next time out.  You do this 3 times a week and it is moor like a job than fun.

But that lure keeps calling you beck and that is what I go through while out there.

Kez, I invite you to come out with me on an all day hunt and I bet you will rethink your statement. But you know, I have been doing it for so long it is part of my way of life.

Like I said come on along for a trip out and enjoy the surfing life.
