any thoughts or reports on any action out there....Fished the Lillian and the Glory last weekend managed 2 blues and a 100lb Mako that made the dinner table....Saw one boat fighting a fish for what seemed like 2 plus hours til we drifted out of site...his fish was pulling him where ever it wanted. The name of the boat was "Scott Free" out of New York if anybody knows of the catch I'd be interested to find out....

for small boat sharking, like a 26' boat, that size gear would be the minimum I would need for the average 100 shark.

the captain that will be going with us next weekend went out last night for an overnight trip. total for the trip was 10 mako and 2 thresher and I think there was one blue in there too.

My report.....fished the Glory all green water, two hours no life but bluefish....went NE to the Mako Hotel still green water.....1 small hammerhead on 20 lb test...the bluefish line.....what a nice time.... and one nice brownie, water cleared up as the day went on...had a boat drag his fish right in our slick as almost to say F.U. when I raised him on the radio all he could say is "no vacancy at the Mako Hotel" but then I read the back of his boat and it said "Legacy" somewhere out of New York I gave up trying to commicate with the bastard....heard reports of mahi and threshers in the area.....gave a newbie his first taste of fighting a shark, needless to say he was asking when the next trip was.....

Bob, Monster Ledge is where I did my lsst trip a couple of years ago.  Had a 7', 200+ mako.  I kept the jaws.     Also had two blue shark, released.

Wetspot, nice report.  It seems you can't get away from the idiots now matter how far you go.

Bob, that is one of the spots I had in mind.  A friend of a friend of a friend  is supposed to give us a spot where he goes.  I'm not really counting on it.  I will check my charts and ask around the dock to see if anyone has been going and doing anything.

[Legacy]

Wet Spot - you mention in your 7/7/07 post that a boat called Legacy from New York was at the mako hotel and that he "dragged his fish right into our slick as almost to say F.U.".  As captain of the Legacy from Staten Island, NY I can assure that the 350-400 pound thresher that my crew was fighting took off directly towards your vessel when hooked.  You set up your slick about 200 yards off my bow at the hotel (not advisable to fish that close to other sharkers) at around 10am.  We had already fought and landed a mako in the 150 pound class that morning and had that fish tied off when the thresher hit.  We had been fishing there since 7:30am.

As you posted earlier about the "Scott Free", when a huge thresher takes off, you need to follow it.  My vessel ended up near your chum slick during the half hour fight since that is where the thresher wanted to go.  I actually had to maneuver my vessel so that the shark wouldn't interfere with your lines.  When I fight large sharks I keep the radio off so I can hear my crew.  I did not reply "No vacancy at the mako hotel".  I did call a few friends on channel 78 to let them know that we released a female thresher that day in the 350-400 pound class in the event that they wanted to take over our slick.  We headed in around noon that day to let others enjoy the spectacular fishing.  Few boats catch a 150 mako and a 350-400 thresher in one day.  Even fewer would have released the thresher.

My crew and I are far from being "bastards" as you describe in your post.  Somebody other than my boat replied to you on the radio that day.  We have helped out numerous boats on the inshore and offshore grounds over the years and are well known in the offshore community.  I have also written 3 articles on shark fishing in the Big Game Journal over the past 3 years to help other sharkers get better at the game.

Good luck in your offshore adventures.  Be careful not to set up your slick so close to other vessels as big makos and threshers will force the other vessel to manuever.
