Homer, AK results
« on: July 23, 2007, 06:17:04 PM »
Three friends & I left 7/7 for 8 days in Ak.1st day out Mon 7/9 rode from Homer 80 miles to the Southern tip of Kenai Penninsula in th Gulf of Alaska, fished in 6'ers with it forecast to go to 9-12,still managed to limit out on Halibut(2 per man)up to 50#,Rockfish(5 per man)up to 8#,Lingcod(2 per man) up to 40# before turning aroound & heading in @ 2pm.Tues stayed in the bay(about 40 miles)Halibut fished near an active volcano limiting out on "'buts" to 80# & also rockfish to 8#.Wed off.Thurs.7/12 left on an overnighter to the southern tip of Kenai on The Gulf again got there about 10am in seas 2' or less!Started fishing for Lingcod had our limit to 50# in an hour, limited out on rockfish in 40 min, limited out on Halibut in 1 1/2 hours, then a bonus Orcas breaching on Silver Salmon(Coho)got in near them and had our 3 per man limit in 1/2 hour!We then headed up into a cove called Taylor bay to drop the hook for the night. While there we cooked some Halibut for supper & watched as Bald Eagles dove on salmon & sea otters swam all around the boat!We were 100yds from shore & the depthfinder read 241'!!Snow capped mountains all around,Heaven on Earth t^.We were up @ 4:45am to the smell of French toast,Ham ,sausage OJ & coffee :o.We then took our 40 min ride to the fishing grounds & started with Silver Salmon jumping all over had our limit in 20 mins, then to Lingcod limiting out in 1/2hr up to 50#,then to rockfish limting out on them in 1/2 hr,we limited out on three species in 1 1/2 hrs!!!Now we took a 40 min ride west to Cook Inlet where we Halibut fished in 390' usin 4#'s lead, whole Salmon heads & salted herring(on the same rig)for 'butts up to 130#(60" fish)the smallest being about 35#.Now we had our limits on everything & it's only 11am!So we start heading in & we're back @ the harbor by 3pm with the first limit catches of Silver salmon in Homer this year!Totals for the 4 days fishing 919#'s Filletscoming home. This was one Hell of a trip where it's just "drop & reel" fishing everytime you hit the bottom (and sometimes before you hit) you are into a fish TT^.My buddy Mike(Beak) even had a 150# skate with like a 7' wingspan all the way to AK & he still can't get away from them ;D.

If you want to go book soon as they are getting squeezed by regulations more & more.Same as here the commercial guys are slaughtering them & the little guys are getting the shaft. We watched a commercial boat @ the process plant offload bucket after bucket of fish from 10# 'buts up to 150#ers & that's daily :'(.Our Capt is an active member of the RFA & has worked with Jim D personally

WOAH...What an experience something one only dreams of and watches on tv.  You guys rock and right now are the envy of the block... t^

Welcome Aboard Beak, thanks for sharing your adventure with us.  One day I would love to go and document a trip like that with video and still photography.

Fantastic Voyage guys, I wish there was a place to go to hear your stories, you know sit around a oil lamp lit room sipping on whatever adult beverage hearing the crackling of the fire in a old pot belly stove.  Just call me an old romantic.

Thanks for the conjured up images as well...WOW

Welcome back to reality.  POOF  :P

Happy Catching
