Sunday Morning HA to Mudhole/Glory/Monster Trip.
« on: August 03, 2007, 02:11:31 PM »
Taking a trip out about 0530 this Sunday from Monmouth Beach.  Anyone else heading out for some Tuna or Mahi action?  You can get me on 68.  Just call for "Beer Me".

Anyone hear anything to persuade me to try another location.  Mudhole and surroundings are about my limit boat wise.

Thanks
Steve

Hi SRS75,

Jusy an FYI ... not meant to change your mind in any way ...

I did that trip yesterday. There are NO mahi on the pots - trolled 100s of them. There was nothing to speak of caught at the Glory Hole. The HA, Monster Ledge, Little Italy and Mudhole proper were dead. Not even bluefish.

The water is very warm but clear. Look for a cooler temp. break.

Nothing breaking the surface.

It was not working there yesterday and I don't see what would change it until the bluefish and baitfish return to the area!

Can you make it to the Barnegat Ridge? If not, try the Manasquan Ridge before heading out to the Mudhole.

"Joey G" may have some info to add ...

I know lots can change in a day but to me, there is nothing of consequence happening with the weather to change the state of things since yesterday (8/2).

Just my $300+ in fuel opinion,

Capt. Ed

PS - For all the environmentalists that thinking rec. fishing is the problem with our resources. With fuel, bait and food, I spent nearly $400 (and that does not include rods, reels, rogs I have). I have 14 pounds of bluefin to show. You can get that in a store for $14/pound. So, I person that has no clue can walk into a store and get the fish for $196. Enviros please answer this - am I really the problem or the public clammering for "cheap" fish the problem? Well, none of the above. Overdevelopment and estuary loss plus lack of understanding of species interaction is the problem!

Funny you mention.  I was actually thinking of the Squan Ridge.  At least I could boat some bonito and have some fun.  Also heard they were picking at the BFT and mahi with the warm weather and water?

Hi SRS75,

Please read my report if you have not.

There are NO MAHI NOR BLUEFIN at the Manasquan Ridge. I have been looking for them there since June. The Bluefin are still south of there and the Mahi are in the Canyons.

Until a nice eddy of water breaks off, this trend will continue I imagine.

BTW, there were only 5 boats yesterday on the Manasquan Ridge yesterday. There will be 1,000 tomorrow.

If you can, troll the Carleson Reef ... I will be.

BTW, the water is too warm on the surface ... all these fish have to be risen to the spread (use some weight via a drail) or jigged. I did try to jig with deadly dicks but I really never found a big concentration yesterday.

Thanks,

Capt. Ed

Hi SRS75,

I forgot to mention that I could not locate any weeds, floating debris or other "stuff" that would be nice for the Mahis.

Absolutely nothing ... strange!

Good luck tomorrow ... if my cell is working, I will be available at 732-859-1212.

Good luck,

Ed

Hi SRS75,

One more thing (man I stayed up too late yesterday).

There were no Party Boats anywhere in the Shark River Reef/Mudhole area. Maybe they are fishing there at night, but not yesterday.

I imagine that if you locate them, you just may find your bonito mixed in with the Blues.

Maybe the fleet is closer to you? I will try to figure out if they were at the MudBuoy or ???

Thanks,

Ed

it's out of your range but the cigar has been good for mahi and bluefin, however I just heard a report from yesterday and the bite is off.

we are saving our full fuel tank and bait for better days. it's costing us an average of $600 to run to the cigar.

All I can say is Ditto what Capt.ED said.. I work hard the other day to raise 5 sharks with no takers and I reset 3 times to get them.. I was out about 16 miles on numerous wreck.. my suggestion, if you mark any signs of life ,, chumm, trollor jig to see if some ones home.. I don't think this full moon phase is helping and something gotta change!!

Looks like the weather made up my mind for me.  Stayed in the bay with the wrong baits and got 1 blue (11 lbs though) and all the robins in the bay.  Weather sounds crappy for the rest of the week.

Anyone else do anything?
