Weakfish are just about everywhere!  ;D

There's been a great night bite that I haven't heard too many other anglers talking about. These aren't the little 12 to 15-inch spikes we see every summer either!

From what I understand, boaters chumming with grass shrimp are doing a number on them too. Action really picked up in mid-July and just seems to be getting better on each trip. At most of my back bay stops, I've had consistent action on the falling tides. I've been fishing with pink Zooms, Berkley Gulp! Shrimp, and peanut bunker.

Not sure where you're fishing, but we've seen lots of good fish between 17 and 24 inches in the backwaters between LBI and Cape May.

Nighttime is the right time.
Sleep is overrated anyway!  ;)

The Cape May jetties have been holding some weakfish during the early-morning hours and the little rock pile by the concrete ship is usually worth a look too.

At night, the bigger weakfish have been holding close to lighted structure. Lighted docks, piers, and bridges are the place to be now. Look for baitfish schools to gather under these lighted areas during the evening tides and you'll find the weakfish.

If you want, you can PM me before you leave next weekend for an updated report.

Hi NJDevil,

Like Far26 said, there has been a good night bite throughout the state.

In the Barnegat Bay, the weakies are in the usual areas around Barnegat Inlet including Myers Hole, 40 can, BB and BI buoys at dawn/dusk. Giving the creeks and river mouths a try, icnluding the Toms River, should work.

In the Upper Barnegat Bay area, around the Mantoloking Bridge and Gunner's Hole, again at dawn/dusk.

The boat traffic is the biggest problem I see.

I cannot speak for the Manasquan River as I have not heard any reports from there.

Other Captain's on this board should be able to add some info on that end.

It is a great time to fish, day and night!

Capt. Ed

Some showing up in the back of Raritan Bay.  Usually very early or late when boat traffic is down.  Some decent sized ones in the mix.  Few taken from shore on snappers...they seem to love them.  Most productive rig was beheaded snappers on hi-lo's t^
