8/11 report
« on: August 12, 2007, 04:42:02 AM »
FIshinfool and I left the dock around 4:30pm (after finally replacing primer bulb).

Made it out past Keyport sailboats and the peanuts were so thick you could walk across them. Everywhere for acres and acres.
Little 2", but my 3/16 mesh cast net was no problem.

Loaded up livewell (as was the plan to have fresh dead bait for 8/12 fluke trip with pops).

Looked for blues working the schools of nutz, but didn't see much going on.

Water was like glass. Hardly a ripple.

Said to fishinfool lets go a little deeper into bay to see what we can find.

Not much so I said, let's try for fluke for a little bit since no blue action was happening.

After 5-10mn on the Keyport flats (and in middle of eating sandwich), got one.

Get it up towards boat and feel it pulling drag.  Had fishinfool get the net and up comes a 21" fat fluke.

the 'fool scooped it up and we had a nice one on deck.  4" chartreuse gulp with a live nut was it's last meal.  Was holding bottom in 19" of water with 1/2oz of lead :)

Wound up with 1 more short and a beautiful ride home as the sun went down.

Have a hundred or so nuts on ice, a few livies still in my well (hoping they will still be alive, but doubtfull and the memory of a nice evening out on the water with my wife (who will post the pic later I am sure).

Interesting, the fluke's stomach was FULL and bloated with a decent sized, partially digested blue claw in it.

Off in a bit to fish with pops for some big fluke in deeper water in the bay.

Nice way to spend a summer afternoon.  t^

If you ever pulling a shell, rock or other debris and you notice any thumbnail sized crabs on it..use them for bait. My son and I have caught countless fluke on crabs of those size. That's another reason why I believe GULP crabs should make a good fluke biat-although I never seem to getting around to using them  ::).

Nice trip and report.   t^

Skolmann, the Gulp crab makes a real good fluke bait.  We used them at the beginning of the season when fishing shallow water (15-20 feet of water tight to the beach).  One crab will last ya a half dozen to a dozen fluke, then it will have to be replaced.  Not many keepers on the crab, but there weren't many keepers to be had at all during that time.
