World Record Fluke Caught today (8/17/2007)!
« on: August 17, 2007, 09:56:28 PM »
Hi All,

It looks like a potential World Record Fluke was caught today. I hope it all works out with the IGFA.

Monica Oswald of Neptune hauled in a 38 inch, 24.3 pound fluke off Monmouth County in about 55 feet of water this afternoon.

There are some pictures floating around the internet ...

She is an excellent fisherwoman who is frequently in the Fisherman Dream boat contests.

I am sure Joe from Irish Ayes would have hooked it today if he wasn't chasing Sea Bass!

It can happen in an instant!

Was told it was caught on a spro jig aboard Capt Jim Freda's Shore Catch Charters... But not yet confirmed.....

Thanks For posting the picture.

I tried to call the Shore Catch people but no answer. They are all in my fishing club so I am sure we will hear all the details soon.

It is not posted on their site yet either!

Thanks Bobber!!!

Hi All,

It may have been on a private boat.

It was not caught by any of the Capts. of Shore Catch.

However, the fish has been confirmed to be a potential IGFA World Record by the owner of Scott's Bait and Tackle. I say potential because all the paperwork and such must be filed.

A new target to shoot at folks!

Hi All,

Determining the age of a Summer Flounder/Fluke has proved difficult to scientists. There are many methods to try to find the age from scales to calcification. All the charts that I have seen have been proved to be error prone.

Without testing, you can be sure that this fish was between 10-20 yrs. old. I say 10 yrs old with certainty from field observations and 20 yrs. old as the theoretical maximum age.

If I come across an age chart I trust, I will post it.

I am going with closer to 20 yrs. old!

Also notice how thin it was in the stomach. It could have been bigger!

Also, this fish has a 99.9% probability it is a female.

Thanks,

Capt. Ed

Seems to me that might be worth a t-shirt. At the very least a sticker.

I don't think I could imagine what it must be like to catch something like that. I thought the 18" fluke I caught last week was heavy.
I think I could be a really good people person if wasn't for the people.

I'm not catching any more fish, but I'm starting to learn why I'm not catching any more fish.

Nice job Monica!

Congrats and good luck with IGFA.  Don't sign anything!!!  Especially if the major companies offer you only a shirt or a couple of lures.

No offence Rod.

Happy Catching

Hi All,

I totally forgot that this record was nearly 32 yrs. old (Charles Nappi in Montauk - Sept. 15, 1975).

Very cool,

Capt. Ed
