8/18 It was a GULPIE Saturday
« on: August 18, 2007, 08:38:05 PM »
Hit the Marina at 9:30 am with a the wind howling I toyed with the boat for most of the morning while my son and brother in law were netting fresh bait. Took the boat out for a test run and started out fishing the river, picking up shorts on the light rods. with the wind blowing steady out of the west at 15 to 20 knots I headed for the inlet while my brother in law thought we would be turning around and heading home. We started our first drift in 24 feet of water just to the north of the inlet, with are drift anchor out and 6 Oz's of lead we started picking away at the shorts and put 2 keepers in the box after a long drift into 45 feet of water. With a wide variety of hardware and baits in the water, Chartruse was producing the fish while they hit on all the baits I WAS OUT FISHED BY 2 GULP MANIACS. My brother in law Coyote Cal fishing a chrome ball and a teaser rig with nothing but GULP on both hooks landing a double on the deck 1 short 1 keeper plus other keepers through out the day. My Son Drew using his 2 rods, one with squid and GULP and the other rod with a tandem hook and a big Gulp whole squid and a GULP chartreuse grub consistently putting fish on the deck. Then, you had me the THICK HEADED GUENIE determined not to me out fished by fake bait sticking to my squid and spearing putting 2 keepers in the box along with several shorts. We made several drifts over the same area from 1:15 pm to 4:30 pm. Total of 11 keepers the biggest Coyote Cal with a 22 incher. YES I WAS OUT FISHED BY GULP :P

Nice report Skip.  I'll be out tomorrow searching for the flatties.

Give me a call if you go out.

I too haven't had a whole lot of luck with gulp, but I don't give it enough time either.  Too traditional I suppose.  Or too technical in trying to figure out the fish. Oh dopey me.   ;D

I may see you in the back of the river.  I have to get fresh bait too.  I will be there at about 7-730.  What time you getting down?

Congrats on discovering the value (even if you had to learn the hard way) of Gulp :)
