Shark!!! Irish Ayes 6/28/12 by Hunter 2
« on: June 28, 2012, 10:52:05 PM »
Got the call from my  "Mentor", "sensei","Professor"  of fishing Joe Of the Irish Ayes for a day of Sharking. We met at the marina at 6am. Johnny Oz, Dennis and myself made up the crew. We had a slight West wind and building seas as we head west around 15 to 20 miles. The water temp was just below 67deg and the drift was around 1mph with sunny skies and no birdlife around. Johnny set up the chumslick and cut mackeral as Joe and I were setting out the first two of 3 lines on the Shimano TLD 25's with 80lb braid mounted on sealine rollerguide rods. The second float started crossing the 1st line so Joe and I were doing the "which way is the line crossed dance" When the long line started peeling out. We thought "Aww its a bluefish" and Joe offered me the rod and I declined. Well it turned out to be a 6ft Thresher and when it saw the boat cfzd, Bye Bye it went back down and far away. I never caught a big Shark so Joe hands me the rod.. Then I got tired and we all played pass the rod for a half an hour till Johnny had it again and I played camera man Hotrod in the bow. Joe hits him with the bangstick and Dennis grabs the flying gaff and we have a Thresher tied up within 45 minutes of getting to the grounds.    We decided to play catch and release so just as we set up again, the close line #3 just under the boat went tick, tick, tick.  Someone yelled "Hooper Start the engines"
and it was game on again only minutes after the lines were set out. Fighting this one shark was the hardest fight I ever had before. Ten to fifteen minutes later we had the cable leader at  the rod tip but for some reason we had no color or idea what it was. Well Guess what?  It dove again and I was exhausted so we did the pass the rod shuffle for another half an hour till we had the beast boatside to see a 12' Thresher shark staring at us wagging his tail and saying "Im done playing with you fellas yet"  rgmn  Well back down he goes and after a total hour of fighting we were able to cut the leader by its mouth and send papa back down to the deep to breed.  t^
We all agreed "No More sharking today weve had enough"
Joe took us to some wrecks for Cod,Ling, Seabass, Bergalls, and a skate to finish the day.
It was a great fun and tiring day for us but well worth it. I Have video that I will post when I figure out how ;D
  Good Luck!,  Eddie "Hunter 2"

Wow, what a great two days. A 10 pound fluke on the boat Wednesday and two thresher shark the next. I'm in heaven.  ;)

Great crews on both trips, great time for all.

I have to believe this catching today, so quickly out of the gate, was karma for going back out and helping a friend Wednesday. Paid off big time.

On thing Eddie left out was Johnny Oz all excited and yelling out, "it's a thresher, I see it's tail!!!", as we were fighting the second fish. Seconds later he backed off and meekly said, "never mind". At that time we all realized that he looked in the water and saw the tail of the first shark that we had tied off the bow of the boat earlier.  ;D That's alright John, we all get delusional at times.  hhppy

Fantastic trip with some great guys.

Boy, I love my retirement. Gotta go, heading out the door for some more fishing.  slt clp clp clp
