Reel Class Report (Bonito, Blues, Bottom) 10/6
« on: October 06, 2007, 08:04:04 PM »
Pushed the meet time for today's trip back to 8AM today due to pea soup fog, and we didn't actually leave the slipo until a quarter of ten.  Had Mike B, Matt, Steve M, and "Bluefish" Steve aboard and our plan was to run north and look for birds/fish as long as the vis would allow us to do so.
Once we broke the inlet we had 3-4 mile visibility, so there was no problem there.  Ran into some birds working just N of Shark River inlet about a mile or so off, with some fast moving fish under them working on rainfish/spearing.  Small jigs produced some taylor sized blues, and at one point we actually had a school of the little blues right under the boat in the crystal clear water.

Finally got into some fish pushing water and bait, got the shads and jigs in, and we very quickly had a nice shot of quality 5-7# bonito, and got one more good shot of them before boat traffic broke it up.  Great action for a couple of quick intervals - we had to be right in the schools to be into the fish.  As soon as you got into them, it was over in a blink.

Ran further north, only to find less action.  Made some casts w/ the shads at the jetty tips - nada.  Wound up doing a little bottom fishign off Long Branch, only to find a bunch of 4-6" seabass that loved our hi-lo rigs, didn't even have one even close to having to be measured.

Finished up running back to the inlet, where we found more super-fast moving bonito.   Tough day, worked real hard for what we put in the boat, but it was rewarding and the weather turned out to be INCREDIBLE for early October.

Kevin of course.  Even if ya don't bleed those things the meat is quality, however a bled bonito provides an even better fillet.

Great sushi too.  t^
