Keeping Your Hands Warm
« on: December 11, 2013, 10:32:21 PM »
Anyone have any tips on keeping your hands warm while fishing during the winter. I do fine keeping my body and my head warm by wearing layers buts its my hands that always freeze. I have good insulated gloves but they don't cut it. They're warm but too thick to bait a hook without taking them off. My hands are nice and toasty but for the minute it takes to bait the hook they're absolutely freezing. Then after baiting the hook I put the gloves on but by the time they warm up again its time to rebait the hook. Any specific gloves you guys use? Maybe some that allow you to bait the hook while keeping the gloves on?

I use gloves where the thumb and index finger split and cold back for knot tying or baiting up.They even have little pieces of Velcro on them to hold the fingers back while  in use. I forgot where I purchased them but Cabelas and Bass Pro have that type.  The fold away mittens at cabelas look warm. t^

as Kenny would say wool, its the only material that still insulates while wet
Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Yup...

I use the wool gloves with out the finger tips...then I put some hand warmer packs on the top of my hand...I think it warms up the blood before it gets to your finger tips...Was cold on the Monger Tues and my fingers stayed warm  ;D

Even when they are wet it works great for me  t^

I like neoprene gloves. They my hands warm, but I do take them off to tie knots. I keep them on while baiting up, removing fish etc. to keep my hands warm and clean. They clean up nice in the washer as well, just line dry them. I've been using Stearns, but just picked up a pair of Stormr Torque Kevlar, got to test them out. They have Kevlar on the pointer and thumb tips to stand up to braided line. Hand warmers in the pockets help for when I don't wear any gloves at all.

Neoprene generally tends to be the best the option when surf fishing or if you are going to be wet. Neoprene works by heating a small layer of water between your body and the inside of the glove. There is some insulation property of neoprene but, it's not great. I find the you get colder with them out of the water.

Wool or smart wool are probably the best options.

Give up the antique wool stuff and go neoprene. The sweat on your hands is enough moisture inside the gloves to keep your hands warm, and clean also. The wet wool gloves, mixed with bait juice, makes yoursmell funny, then Willy is not to happy when you take a leak.
