10/14 Blackfishing Report
« on: October 14, 2007, 07:05:16 PM »
Had orginally planned to fish either the PP Canal for blackfish or the bayshore for bluefish today but I got a call from Capt. Frank of the Fins On Feathers Friday afternoon asking if I was available.

Jason and I were joined by Capt. Frank Saturday afternoon (after his morning trip on Saturday) and collected a 1/2 a bucket of fiddler crabs and another 1/4 bucket of asians crabs.

We cast netted several dozen peanut bunker and headed off.

We first trolled clark spoons for a while in hopes of repeating the action Capt. Frank had Saturday morning with over a dozen false albacore in the #10-12 class. Nothing doing on that front today.

Moved out to some snags out between the channels and had action with blackfish from jump. Fiddlers were the hot bait early before half a green crab became the bait of choice.. First 3 blackfish over the rail were all easy keepers and went in the box. Took a while for Jason to catch his but he eventually did and we had our 4 man limit to #6. In addition Capt. Frank boxed one of the biggest inshore sea bass I've seen in a long time. This had to be easily between #5-6. When we lost the tide, wwe moved inshore and had a pick of 'toy' tog and short sea bass with the occasional porgy in the mix. Once the tide turned, we went back to our original spot and again had good action with tog. Green crabs, fiddlers and clam strips were all catching tog in the afternoon.

Including the 4 we kept we released probably another 2 dozen keeper sized tog and close to 3 dozen short tog.

Slow bite on the asian crabs.

Great trip...been meaning to get out with Capt Frank one of these days. He's in Leonardo, right? Dumb question...Is his boat on a floating dock or is there a ladder at low tide?

Yes Leonardo State Marina

Ladder at low tide but I'm sure if you have a problem going up/down the ladder he'll pick you up/discharge you at the floating dock.

He's running open trips every Tuesday & Thursday night from 4:30 PM - 9:30 PM. Sign up for these trips on the other site.

10th place sea bass is listed at #5.94 so it would have been close--but then again I'm pretty sure Capt. Frank is not a Fisherman subscriber. Neither am I for that matter as I still buy it at the newstand every Wednesday morning as I have since I was a kid.

I agree...but it is what it is.

A party boat out of Sheepshead Bay made a drop about 3/4 of a mile from us and I commented that while we were only allowed 1 keeper blackfish-fares on that boat were able to keep 10.
