Weakfish October 17, 2007 (pic)
« on: October 17, 2007, 06:47:38 PM »
Well as I said in my post from yesterday, I went out this morning to the Point Pleasant canal looking for weakies. First cast was a bluefish, and second cast was a weakie, about 18/19 inches(didn't bother weighing or measuring him). Anyways, I said to myself, this is going to be a great day(NOT). Turned out it was LOADED with blues, and while usually I can get under the blues for the weakies, these blues were hugging the bottom(all morning). Caught about a dozen blues, and then they just decided to play with and nip off the blasted Fin-S fish. I ran out of Fin-s fish(2 dozen of them), and went home. Found some more at Pells on the way home, so I decided to go back at slack tide 2 PM this afternoon cause it was bugging me, I figured the weakies might have shutdown because of the blues and might want to feed. I was hoping the blues were gone. Bright sun, nice water just starting to move, and at 3:30, I nailed a nice weakie, 25 1/2 inches long, a shade over 5 lbs., not quite 5 1/4. Tide started ripping through there shortly thereafter, and I called it a day, and I was a happy camper that the blues left. Pink Fin-S fish, freshwater tackle and 12 lb test, they certainly give a good account of themselves. Pic enclosed.

Nice fish. You fishing from shore or a boat? Where in the canal. I would like to try for some this weekend.

Southpaw, we're fishing from land, at the mouth of the canal. I've fished it on land and by boat, and it's definitely more effective to fish it from land if you understand the water flow there.

Late update, I just got back from the canal, 11:15pm. My son and his 2 friends went down there at 7pm. His other friend(who was fishing when I left earlier), told him the bite took off right after I left this afternoon. He and his friend picked up 14 weakies(all on pink Fin_s) in the back pocket when the water was really ripping, from 14/19 inches, and one 24 inch. By the time my son arrived bite was slowing down, but they picked up 3 more, 2 on Fin-S fish, 1 livelining a peanut. SO they called me up and said get back down here, but by the time I got there, the bite was dead, and I did zip.
