Marlin, Eyeball and Yellowfin
« on: August 12, 2014, 10:57:14 AM »
Ran our first Canyon trip of the year Saturday and had a very good trip. Started on the troll and went 1 for 2 on whites then picked a Yellowfin on a way-back Google-eye before switching to the chunking melee. Started picking Yellowfin on the drift (average 60#)as the bite picked up we jigged a slob that nearly spooled the little 16 shimano that was bumped up to 20 pounds of drag. After 2 hours we were stalemated @ 90 feet and very hard to move a big fish on what i would call a Striper rod. Then it gets worse the rod snaps and the fish drops to 120 feet. The only good thing is the fish was as tired as us and we slowly beat him over the next hour. In the end the 263 pound bigeye came through the door after breaking the rod, bending the jig and breaking the tip off of the hook. The guys did great keeping steady pressure on a fish that should have gotten away a few times. This was enough to send us on our way for a nice moonlit ride home with our Bigeye and 6 yellows on good ice. We probably would have doubled our yellowfin catch if we didn't spend 3 hours on the bigeye but its all good and glad to see an August bite again. I will try and post pictures here if not there on our Facebook page.
We will be doing a few open boat trips coming up so if your interested and want info call or text me @ 609-290-8900
Thanks, Mike

Great report Mike.  It is amazing how the biggest fish always hits the smallest rod and reel you are using.   TT^ Awesome job getting that huge bigeye into the boat after all those problems.  You would have won over $400,000 in the Ocean City, MD White Marlin Open last week with that fish.

I don't know where you fishing, but I was always shocked by the amount of boats that were out fishing in the canyon when we arrived.  You can see the big fleet you were by in that first picture.

Good luck on your future trips and keep the reports and pictures coming.
