I made it to the boat for the first time in weeks due to vacation and a very busy business schedule. The crew consisted of friends Brian, Boyd, and Kyle. We left the dock at 0900 and hit the ACR. We found a little drift that produced a few here and there with the end total of about 10 shorts and 3 keepers to 24". After 12:00 the drift became a little fast and it was difficult to hold bottom so we pushed offshore a bit. Hot color of the day was pink dressed with a smelt from the Asian market!
A few miles away it was light tackle trolling which quickly yielded about 8 bonito and we began marking good. We decided to try and jig some of the speedsters and right away we had a couple more lost at the boat. After that we got covered up in drop and reel snapper blue action on the light tackle. Everyone had a blast, well except Kyle.... He had been puking since noon!
While trolling we had seen some sharks basking and had seen one right before our last drift. So, I broke out the 30TW and live lines a fresh snapper and within 3 minutes the line was coming off of the reel. We managed the 4'-5' shark to the boat to remove the hook and safely release it. I am not 100% certain but, I think it was a dusky. It had very, very symmetrical and straight teeth, almost like it had previously had braces.
It was a good day with plenty of action and fillets for all. It was the first time I had bonito. I pan cooked it with butter/olive oil and blackened seasoning with a little lemon. It wasn't half bad...
