11/5 BIG BASS on the UnReel!
« on: November 06, 2007, 07:28:36 AM »
We headed out for our 1st fall striper trip this season. We were greeted by some beautiful weather and flat seas. We started off with a good bite on our first rip of the day, but didn't get the hook in him. Then that was it for the bites in the rips. We decided to go chunking in search of some big bass, and we did find a few hungry ones. We boated 7 keepers and lost one near the boat. All but one of them were over 20 pounds and 3 were over 30 pounds. The biggest of the day was 34 pounds and the smallest was 33". We fished in about 30 ft of water and had fish on both tides. Great trip and thanks again to my crew, way to catch'em guys!

First off let me say it's a pleasure to finally hear that someone got into some nice bass.

Irish, it's my theory (although afew others I've spoken to about it agree) that when the bigger bass are migrating west along the south shore of Long Island when they get to Fire Island, Jones Inlet area instead of continuing west they make a left turn and go south (following the track of bigger baits ie herring, mackerel) and are way out in the EEZ zone. They eventually swim in a more southwest direction getting close to the beach in southern. In the past I've heard from captains coming back from offshore and seeing schools of big bass working bait 5, 6 up to 10 miles offshore.

One theory of why this happens is because of all the commerical (& recreational boat traffic) in the NY Harbour area forcing the bait offshore. I'm not sure if this is the case. But whatever the reason, I believe that the majority of the big bass bypass the north and most of the central NJ coastline. At least in the fall. If you notice the spring run the past 6+ years have yeilded much bigger bass than the traditional fall run.

Skolmann.  I totally agree with you on the bass staying offshore once they get to LI.  I have said that for several years now.  I hope this changes and they run the coast line instead of the bee line straight to south jersey.   TT^
