Oyster Creek Shoaling from NJSP
« on: April 01, 2015, 02:56:13 PM »
Significant Shoaling Within the Oyster Creek Channel
Now, we know what you're thinking: What is shoaling and why should I care?

Well, if you're not a mariner, seafarer, or sailer, you shouldn't. Shoaling is a sandy elevation under water that causes a hazard to navigation

If you plan on navigating the waters in the Oyster Creek Channel, please be aware of the following warning:
The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau, along with the United States Coast Guard, are advising mariners to transit the Oyster Creek Channel with extreme caution, due to significant shoaling.
The area of concern is located on the westerly portion between buoys 38 and 40, within Ocean Township, New Jersey.

From Sea Tow

"Not much has changed from last year. Not sure where the 2 to 3 foot of water depth is but if you stay away from 38 and 36 there is at least 6' of water. After you get past the new 39 stay on the green side to avoid the shoaling on the North side (red side). Follow the yellow brick road and you will be fine. Sea Tow standing by."

From Silver Cloud Facebook

"I have talked with the coast guard , the problem is in Oyster Creek Channel ONLY! marker 38 and 40 are in low water. the coast guard has installed 2 new markers.. 1 red 1 green. 38 A and 39 . it is a tight gate. the area is prone to shoaling every year. this is nothing new. last nite at low tide the coast guard had 5 ft of water thru the gate. the plan is to dredge late june early july. I will keep you updated. please pass this info on. and again, this in NOT the bay , Just the oyster creek channel where it always shoals.."

Approximately 17 years ago I was overseeing the Oyster Creek dredging project for the power company. that was in 1998 I believe. Not sure if there was any dredging since.

That's not surprising, since there was a tight budget on the project in 98 I wasn't able to charge time to that site then, was a real pain trying to figure my time in a more....lets say a more imaginative way.
