Sandy Hook Report 11/25/07
« on: November 26, 2007, 06:42:45 PM »
Fished Sandy Hook bay area on Sunday 11/25 aboard my friends 21ft Grady.  We anchored over by Romer Shoal Light and chunked clams for about 2 hrs with nothing to show for our efforts.

We decided to change tactics and broke out the wire line and shad umbrella rigs.  Smart move.  We had non stop action in the Ambrose Channel for about 2 hours.  We landed between 25-30 bass, mostly on the short side.  All in all, a great day on the water, and sea conditions were perfect.

Nice job.  Seems the troll is where it's at right now.  Shads on umbrellas.  We were getting a mix of blues and stripers, mostly blues, two weeks ago.  When you can find the fish stacked up, then it's time for the Ava's.   t^

Good going... TT^

Just went over to Grumpys this afternoon and picked up some storm shad.  Paul was saying that they are hot right now.  I'll let you know by Wednesday.

Happy Catching

I hear what you are saying about guys not wanting to troll.  I have the same thing on my boat, UNTIL we start hooking up on the troll, then they sing another song.   TT^

Pulling wire really takes two guys who know what they are doing.  One guy to drive and the other to run the lines.  I have pulled a lot of wire by myself and have lost plenty of rigs.  I switched over to the braided wire instead of the monel.  It's got a little more diameter so you have to let more out to get the lines down but it doesn't kink and brake.

Dave, when you say braided wire, are you referring to lead core?

Joe,

I have had some say they would rather anchor and drink beer than pull wire, no matter how bad the fishing was........ 5hrug bngh

But as you said previously, 'you gotta do what ya gott do' to catch.   ;D

Personally, I'd rather be catching the fish by just about any means.   TT^

I use the Malin-7 stainless cable 40 lb test.  It is a copper or coffee color.  The diameter is .016 which is actually a little less than the soft stainless trolling wire which is what we all learned on.  The dealer who sold me on the stuff said it's very popular in the Chesapeake and not so popular up North.  I love the stuff.  The braided strains create more resistance in the water vs the smooth soft wire.  My formula is for every 50ft of line I let out it goes down about 8ft when trolling and umbrella rig at 5-6knts vs the soft wire which is 10ft down for every 50ft of line you let out.

I have bought the braided cable line at Fisherman's headquarters on LBI.  They have a large spool and will put it on for you.  I have also bought it at Sportman's Center in 300 ft lengths.  It is marked every 50 feet.  Check out the Malin website and they have all the info you will ever need.

Rod- I am very excited about the new boat.  It is going to be a long winter waiting to take her out.  I am looking forward to a great summer as long as the regulations don't strangle us.
