Mojo Lures
« on: October 31, 2016, 08:33:07 PM »
I was just wondering since I don't have any Mojo lures. What weight should I get for trolling for stripers? I used 50# Mono while trolling if that helps any. Thanks for the help in advance.

It's probably more about what size rod you will be running them on..

That is pretty much the speed you want to run anything to catch stripers. You can run a little faster for blues but really don't want to have blues tearing up your mojo's.

Here is my economy setup:
- a three way swivel rated 100 lbs (or more)
- two barrel swivels with coast locks rated 100 lbs http://www.tackledirect.com/spro-spsclb-04-3-power-swivel-with-coastlock-snap.html
- two sections of 80-100 lb mono, approx. 4 ft and 8 ft
- 16 ounce mojo: http://www.tackledirect.com/blue-wat...ojo-lures.html
- 9 inch shad on the mojo: http://www.tackledirect.com/blue-water-candy-9-inch-shad-2-pack-white.html
- 8 ounce parachute jig: http://www.tackledirect.com/blue-wat...chute-rig.html (these are tandems, i could not find separate ones online. these 12oz/8oz parachutes are basically the same as a mojo)
- 6 inch curly tail on the parachute jig

the lighter jig goes onto the longer section of mono (see link to naked rig below).  You can play around with different weights, but typically the larger is double the smaller (in my case 16oz and 8oz, maybe 16oz and 6oz). At trolling speed (2 – 4 kts), drop the rig to the bottom.  When it hits bottom, lock up the reel, wait for a few seconds, and drop it again.  When u hit bottom second time, lock it up and you should be in the zone.  The key is to stay close to the bottom without dragging it.  I was in like 45 feet of water about 2 miles out, off brigantine.

I was trolling with a PENN senator, 80 lb mono backing with 40lb braid tied to the rig. if it was my choice i would have gotten at last 50lb braid or more just so i couldn't lose the rig as easily, but the shop only had 40.
These also come pre rigged at bass pro, at least in AC, NJ. Many other places have them as well (Absecon Bay, TackleDirect, etc).

More options:

Rattlin mojo (24oz):

with maja bunker spoon instead of parachute jig:

Its better to sit in a boat and think about God, than to sit in a church and think about fishing.

Make something very similar using an ultra minnow head. Bring your skirt/tied hair forward and provides a great effect. You can add a second hook into shad body using a stinger rig. You can run an 8 and 6,5 or 4 oz body as outlined for your two rigs.
