Need Help! What would you use?
« on: July 31, 2018, 04:37:35 PM »
I’ve always enjoyed reading your posts, I’ve learned a lot from you guys, you’re some of the most knowledgeable guys I know when it comes to fishing so I need your help. Saturday I am going for Fluke on a company outing on a charter out of Atlantic Highlands and every year we all try to out do each other for bragging rights, if we are all giving squid and spearing as bait (2 hook rig) what would you use on one hook to gain an advantage, swimming mullet, bass assassin, bunker etc... Thanks for your help in advance, I’ll let you know if I win bragging rights.

Peruvian smelt on the upper hook if you can find them, if not then regular smelt.

Lower hook would be a bucktail big enough to get down with a nice big gulp tail on it. Be prepared to lose it if you drift over structure, have back ups.
All your tuna's are belong to me

Load the hook with whatever bait you are given. Pray for a searobin. If you're prayer gets answered, ask the mate to make strips of it.

If you want an edge be prepared to pony up.

You’ll need a good assortment of Bucktails in different weight and color.

Then comes the Gulp.

6” pearl white swimming Mullets

5” nuclear chicken grubs

5” bubblegum grubs

You’ll need a 30# fluorocarbon leader with a barrel swivel.
You’ll need to make two dropper loops.
The first loop is 12” below the barrel swivel.
The second loop is 18” below the first loop, this will be for your Bucktail.

The top loop gets an 8/0 gamatsu octopus hook. The hook gets the 6” pearl white swimming Mullet.

The Bucktail gets the grub. Cut grub to size to fit the Bucktail hook.

The mate on the boat should know how to tie this for you if you need help.

Be prepared to lose rigs if you’re not accustomed to fishing structures.
This could get real costly very fast.

Do not use bait on this rig described above. It will only attract junk fish.

Use the lightest Bucktail you can. It seems to get bigger fish.

Good luck and post a report.

Well, thanks for the help but the captain decided to take us for Porgies since he said the Fluke fishing wasn't that good lately. He tried a few spots, not many Porgies so towards the end of the trip we switched over for Fluke. I did use a 5" Bubblegum Grub and caught more shorts than anyone else on the back of the boat but no one hooked a keeper. Well we had a great time and there's always next year. Thanks again.

did you guys at least get some porgies to take home? Make a point that you caught the most shorts and should acquire the bragging rights. lol
