hook sharpener
« on: January 24, 2008, 10:08:24 AM »
Anyone know of a good hook sharpener?  How about some sharpening techniques?  I have read that keeping a piece of chalk in the tacklebox/toolbox will help absorb moisture away from the metal lures and tools.

i use just a simple sharpening stone.. you only need a few strokes for the hooks.  I only sparpen those on plugs and jigs, I throw the plain hooks away when they get dull.

I use the Smith's Retractable Knife Sharpener.  It is about 7 bucks and is small enough to fit anywhere.  It is good for sharpening knives both straight edge as well as serrated.  It has a grove for hooks also.

Most hooks today are chemically sharpened and do not take to a hook hone too well.

Easier to replace a hook, but if they can be sharpened, I carry a small hook file that I keep in my gear.

I like the looks of that one from Cabela's, Skip.

Yea Joe I have 2 of them one for each boat. It has a notch in one side for the point of the hook, makes it re esay to triangulate the point. I bought my first one about 12 years ago and it still is going strong.  t^

Most of the hook sharpeners I have seen are made of metal and get rusty after a short time on the boat.  I may have to pick up a couple of the ones from Cabela's.

I've been trying to find a decent one to carry in my store.

So far, no luck.
