Just from interaction with catfish on this site I can tell you he does nothing just for status. Everything the man does is to catch more fish (or turtles).

In the surf I use an Okuma 10 wt. fly reel on an Echo rod with Rio Striper  intermidiate line.
PS - That's what that part of the alphabet would look like if there where no Q or R.

Oh I forgot about my fly stuff.  I have a 9' Fenwick blank I tied about 20 years ago matched to a Sears reel about the same vintage with 9 wtf line.  It works real well and I have never had a problem with the equipment and it has caught tons of fish in the flats and back waters of IBSP.

If you can afford the equipment more power to you.  I am on a budget and have been for years so I have learned to make things last it something breaks you fix it.

But hey, thats me and the way I was brought up.  This old dog ain'ta gona change now.

I get a kick outta the guys on the beach struttin around with their 800.00 VS reels and custom rods.

Total status thing.

I use a Penn 704z that I have for 15 years.

The thing has been through wars.

And has never once failed me.

It's an awesome reel.

Don't get me wrong, those other reels are pretty.
kind of like a guy fishing w/ a 4 dollars teaser in bluefish waters ,I dont fish w/ good gear as a statis symbol I fish it because I want the best for something I love to do

Wasn't talking about you.

I was referring to some other people I know.

Who has 4 dollar teasers?

They must be real nice to go for that much each.

Damn, I wish I could sell mine for that.

Actually, I didn't even realize you were a VS user.

Until now that is.

MBOY - Magging the Avet was simple really - the hardest part was taking the reel apart between casts to add or subtract mags. (I started w/ 4 so I was takin' them out) - I had a good idea which thickness mags to use from reading about how to do it - Lots of stuff online - just google "magging an Avet" or "magging an SX" the number of mags depends on the weights you will typically be throwing - In my case, I'll be using the SX on my heavy meat rod, so I will be throwing a minimum of 5oz. of lead and BIG bait, usually bunker head w/ a good amount of meat left on it. Like I said in my earlier post, my trials have been with 8oz. of lead only - so the magging I've done may need to be tweaked once I get to the beach and start throwing bait. If you'd like me to, I'll gladly send you some mags - just PM me.    (Ed)

Yeah, true.

Alot of the dudes I see are snapperheads.

They like to try and look the part, but have no clue.

Slinging 8ozs of lead with a giant chunk.

Using a 12' Ugly Stick telephone pole.

And a $1000.00 VS.

I get kick.

I use a VS 150 on a Lami 1084 unless I am tossing plugs over 3 oz then I use a Lami 1205 with a Penn 704 Greenie bail-less.

Welcome Aboard Mullaney,

Nice you could join us.  I think it all boils down to what you can afford.  I only recently was able to go for the better rods and reels but there is no way I can afford the big stuff even today.

I still catch fish just like the big guns and I have fun doing it, thats what it is all about.
