Experiences with ad on Hydrofoils
« on: April 20, 2008, 05:23:04 PM »
Thinking about adding a hydrofoil to my 90 hp Evinrude.  Run a 17' McKee Craft(similar to Whaler).  35 gallon fueltank across stern. 18 inches from transom.  Would like to get a better hole shot.  With the weight of the fuel and motor she takes a while to get on plane.  Looking at an SE Sport 300.  Has anyone tried a hydrofoil?  Results??

Yeah, I had one, they suck.

Now that I got that out of the way   ;D

My boat is heavier than yours.  It may serve you well but did little for me.

Look into a set of tabs for your ride.  Well worth the investment you wont be disappointed with.

I had one on my last boat which had a 90HP Merc. 2 stroke.  My hole shot was greatly improved along with overall stability.  I'll be putting one on my 150 Suzuki in a couple of weeks.  Let me know how you make out with it.

tabs will work much, much better.  I can't see why the hydrofoils won't work, but nothing compared to the tabs.  I can get my boat on plane in 3 seconds with my tabs set properly.

I have one one my 18' Jon and it does what I hoped it would, which is get me on plane quicker..The boat only has a 4-stroke 40hp on it, and between the gas tank, 3 batteries and my copious behind all being aft, it really wallowed like a pig before getting out of the hole..Tabs did'nt seem practical on this tin can..The hydrofoil made a big difference in this case, and now she pops up pretty quick.. I agree with the other guys though..Tabs will do more for you on a heavier boat and also allow you to fine tune your ride characteristics..If it's only to help get up on plane,IMO the foil may do fine.. Here'es a shot of mine..

I have both, trim tabs and a hydrofoil. On my boat anyway, it doesn't seem to affect performance any and does make the trim tabs more responsive especially because my particular model I believe is "under-tabbed" as far as size goes. I have a cobra model bought through Cabela's and it's on an F-225 Yam.  ;)

Buddah, Are you aware there is no prop on your unit? Maybe the Hydro would be more effective. Please put prop on Before you go out to get those big bass (just joking). Good Luck and Welcome.                        AJ.
