Fished with Santa aboard today
« on: June 17, 2008, 05:53:43 PM »
Today, me, BobG and Leon, AKA Santa, went out to try to find some striped bass. Got started at 1130.
We left Shark River Inlet and turned right, heading south. No more than a half mile south we found a school of bunker.

Snag hooks were tossed into the school and we now had some live bait. We sent the bunker to the bottom. No one home.

We moved out into 40 feet of water where we found another school of bunker and put the lines down again. Three lines in the water, now a waiting game. After a short lull one of the rods goes off. I pick up the rod and set the hook on what feels like a fine fish. I passed the pole over to Leon (Santa), as he had never caught a striped bass of size.

After I pass the rod off the other two reels screech and start paying out line. Now, all three of us are hooked into fish. BobG is the first to loose his battle. He proceeds to bring in a body less bunker.  Shortly after, I am fighting an empty hook. I bring my line in and nothing is left of the bait. Bass or Blue? Will never know.

While all this is going on Santa is still hooked up and not gaining any ground. His fish now brings him under the boat. Santa starts gaining on the fish and finally brings him boat side and within reach of the net. Into the net his bass slides.

Put the ruler to the fish, verdict-42 inches!

We never had another bite in the next three hours and decided it was time to head in.

Over to Fisherman's Den for a weigh in. 36 pounds. Nice fish Santa. Don't forget an extra toy for Captain Joe this Christmas.  TT^

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.
