Tog, being in the wrasse family are generally inactive at night.  Some divers even report that they appear to "sleep" inside crevices.

While you may hook a stray one or possibly in a very well lighted area, tog are a daytime species to target.

Do you mean that fishing on wall edges are doing better than trying and work the bottom by casting out at the canal?
The current will take your presentation to the edge quickly anyway. Or do you mean the inlet walls?

The inlet wall. about 5-10 ft off has been productive for me on the ingoing tide. Less snags also. Not the wall on the canal.

With the tog trip canceled Saturday and the surf being slow, I tried the canal this morning.  Stopped by the Hooker in Brick for some crabs.
Fished from about 9am to 1130 with high slack being around 1030.
Got 3 fish, 2 @ 13in and 1 @ 16in.  Had many missed hits too.  Still new at this tricky tog thing, but catching on.  Saw about a dozen other fish caught, mostly short.  Heard of one other keeper at 17in.
Stopped back at the Hooker to have Rich weigh-in my first keeper tog at 2 1/2 lbs  TT^

We didn't do a pic today Rod.  Didn't seem worth it at 2.5lbs.  I'll try tomorrow for a picture worthy slob  ;)

has anyone been down to the canal lately?  i mess around there once in a while and was curious as to how long the tog seem to hold inside.  is this a bite that lasts all winter long?  looking for other options besides for trout come the end of striper fishing.  thanks.
