Foggy Flukin' in Forked River 7/6/08
« on: July 06, 2008, 06:26:47 PM »
My brother-in-law and nephew came down to do some Barnegat Bay fluking today.  Its been quite awhile since we've fished together, so I was looking forward to it. ;D

We launched around 6am and were immediately greeted by thick fog.  When we got out to the mouth of the river we found it tough to even find a marker in the bay.  Once we got our bearings, we drifted around BI and caught a few shorts on bucktails and teasers.  We hoped the fog would burn off, but it never did.  This limited our options as to where we could fish. And getting anywhere near the inlet was impossible for us.  :-\

We tried a few other spots and caught a few more shorts.  My nephew had a blast using an ultralight outfit and catching some sea robins on jigs. TT^

We finished the day just outside Oyster Creek, where I finally managed one 20 1/2", 3 1/2lb. keeper on a bucktail.  ;)

Despite the conditions today and our lack of mobility we had a fun time with a lot of laughs! Great to get out there with those guys again! t^

It's hard to say.  I would think that the water would be too warm at this time of year so close to the plant.  I always saw that area as a winter/early spring spot (used to catch a lot of winter flounder there).  But who knows?

Have you been doing well with the blues and weakies there lately?  I would be curious to know what the water temp is right off of Rt. 9.

BTW, I don't know if you're allowed to fish there,  but I was thinking that the park at the end of Beach Blvd. might be a good place to fish. t^

you are allowed to fish there, i believe----i have----but the water is really shallow, alot of crabbing there. the blues are still hanging around there,(oyster creek/rt 9) the weaks are there early in the morning, before the traffic noise starts. just looking for a good summer place to fish and actually catch dinner. no boat, no luck, i guess

Great report, and nice pics. Fog was bad all over today. Sounds like a nice day though in good company and you did get a keeper.

GD-

How about the Barnegat Docks?  I haven't fished there in a long time.  I've never caught fluke there, (never targeted them) but I have caught a striper or two from that area in the spring.  And I've also hooked into a nice sized cat there as well!  (I'll have to post that story sometime.) ;D

Who knows?  It could be worth a shot. ;)

best thing about barnegat dock this time of year is crabbing. very good spot for it. in another week or so snapper fishing will heat up for the kids
