Dead Whale Washes Ashore A17 Area
« on: August 30, 2008, 04:06:49 PM »
I heard info that a large(50 feet), dead, decomposing Humback whale washed ashore around A17.  I don't have anymore info, except that it really smells!

What a weekend for the beach, first medical waste then a big whale.  At least the whale is supposed to be in the water.

The APP is reporting an even bigger whale, anywhere from 60-70 feet!  Badly decomposed, stinking to high heaven and looks like shark bites ate at it.  They still haven't removed it or dragged it back out.  They aren't quite sure what they want to do with it or when!!

Hey Surfrocket...need any bait or chum??

Plus if you read that article there was also a fish kill of some sort but the two were not related.

I will have more info when I get back later.  If you are looking to come down to the shore area by Seaside Heights and Seaside Park DON'T.

It is so packed that people are parking all over the place and the Police are having a field day with the tickets.

The park was closed for a while not sure if it is open yet but if you have a BB Pass your good to go.

Happy Catching

Thanks Paul...I will not be leaving the house on that advice.  Yesterday was very pleasant and not terribly crowded on the roads or over on the Island.  Not venturing out there today!!

Capt Bob>>>>that's awesome!  Certainly would work!!  rofla

I heard the smell is just horrendous anywhere within a mile or so of the decomposing carcass!!
Yummmmmmm

Hi All,

I will be posting some pictures of what is left of the whale in the morning.

There is not mych left but what is there smells pretty bad.  We were at A13e tonight and you can smell it all the way up there.  It smells like decaying grass.

BTW we did not catch a thing but had some great smores my daughter and her boyfriend made over the open fire.

I took the advice of someone in the know and stayed away from clams and used bunker and squid (whole) and the only thing that was biting were the crabs.

Oh well next time I will use my own intuition and get the clams anyway, along with the bunker and anything else that seems to be out there.

Happy Catching

Paul

Good try Paul!  A nice night out on IBSP anyway with your family.  S'mores...ummmm ummmm good.  Next to a bonfire...doesn't get much better than that(except maybe a fish or 2)!!

I'm surprised you didn't have any blues take the bunker??  Hopefully they won't be so elusive, as they have been this summer!  I have never tried whole squid before in the surf.  I have fished squid strips in the surf and whole squid off the rocks and jetties.  When I throw bait(which is rare), I tend to favor clams as well.  I like soft shell calico crabs too!

I can't wait to see pics...I guess decaying grass is not the worst smell.  I'd love to go see a live whale in the Ocean, but for now pics of a dead one will do  :-\.

Thanks

Hardly looks like a whale. Had to have been dead for a while.

Thanks for the pics Paul!  It really doesn't look like a whale.  I don't even know if they will be able to get any info from it...it is pretty well decomposed.

I will pass on the new technology of smellernet!  I don't think Comcast would get it right anyway... rofla hhppy!

I was at the park today,,they buried the giant(hope it had a good life)area 17,,they left the jaw bones lying against the dunes,, they are very large as in mammoth large.
Paul maybe you can get a pic of them and do them(the whale) some justice in their size and girth. Maybe a roaming gome on it ;)

I'll try but not sure when I can get out there till Friday.  Those bones will be on display I guess once they are cleaned up and made presentable at the conservation building I am told.  Give them a while and go on a tour... t^

That will be interesting to see.  Hopefully no one does anything stupid to them while they are still lying out there?!

My uncle was out on his bosses boat and they were the 1"s who actually called it into the coastguard. He said they saw the thing from like a mile away.
