NJSWF STRIPED BASS AND BLUE FISH SURF TOURNAMENT

NJSWF STRIPED BASS AND BLUE FISH SURF TOURNAMENT

Ok you land locked fishermen and women. The boating crowd has had two tournaments this season. Now it is time for the surf people to get their fifteen minutes of fame.

The Administrators and Moderators of the WWW.NJSaltWaterFisherman.com (from here-on-in referred to as ‘the committee’) would like to invite all active members (those with ten or more posts) to enter our first, of hopefully many, surf tournament. New members of NJSWF can sign up for the tournament with approval of the committee.

This tournament will be for surf/land/pier/bridge fishing only. Fishing from a boat, kayak, raft, or any type of floating structure will not be permitted. Fishing is permitted in New Jersey waters only.

Prizes will be awarded to the three largest (length, not weight) striped bass and the three largest (length, not weight) bluefish caught. Length, not weight had been selected to encourage the practice of catch and release.

You may enter for striped bass only for fifteen dollars($15.00) or for bluefish only for fifteen dollars($15.00). You may also enter for both species at a bargain rate of twenty-five dollars ($25.00).  Entry after the starting date will be allowed with approval of the committee. The entry fee will remain the same for late entrants. A forty-eight (48) hour waiting period will be required before catch entries can be made for those who sign up after the starting date. Entrants for both species will be eligible to win prizes for both species. However, an entrant will only be allowed one place per species.

To measure and submit an entry, you must use a ruler/measuring board with readable numbers in inches. A measuring board with hand made markings for length will not be accepted. All entries are to be submitted by photo with the fish on the board/ruler showing the entire fish with the head of the fish even with the ‘0’ mark of the ruler. The tail may be squeezed to attain the longest length attainable (as per striped bass regulations on measurement). A dollar (or any other denomination) bill must also be placed on the measuring device, preferably at the '0' marking of the ruler, showing the entire length of the bill in the picture. Do not fold the bill. Entrant will then email a full size picture to me at <IrishAyes@optonline.net>.

This tournament will begin 7AM, Saturday, October 4, 2008 and end Sunday, November 2, 2008 at 12 noon.

At this time, it is proposed that the winners will be presented cash prizes at 1PM Sunday, November 5, 2008 at a location to be announced. You do not have to be present at the awards ceremony to be eligible to win. Those winners not present will be mailed their award at the earliest convenient date of the committee. We hope to have some type of BBQ, if possible, at the awards ceremony.

Anyone wishing to enter may sign up on this post. Include what species you will be signing up for. Make check out to NJSWF and send payment to:

Joe Gogan
PO Box 10122
Trenton, NJ 08650

You can also use Paypal... sales@njoutdoorsmedia.com (add 4% for Paypal fee).

A complete listing of all who entered will be posted prior to the start of the tournament and updated as needed. An update of any fish entered will be completed at the earliest time possible.

Bonus Prizes!

Continuing their generous support of NJSWF, Dick’s Sporting Goods has once again graciously donated prizes for our tournament!
Six $10 Dick’s Sporting Goods Bonus Certificates will be awarded throughout the tournament.

The first $10 Bonus Certificate will be awarded to the angler catching the largest length fish overall (striper or bluefish) on the first day of the tournament (Saturday 10/4).  As stated above, the tournament will begin at 7:00am that day.

In addition to that, a $10 Bonus Certificate will go to the angler catching the largest length fish overall (striper or bluefish) each week.  The weeks will run from Sunday through Saturday.  Anglers must have their fish certified no later than 11:59 pm each Saturday to be eligible to win for that week.

Week 1:  Sunday 10/05 through Saturday 10/11
Week 2:  Sunday 10/12 through Saturday 10/18
Week 3:  Sunday 10/19 through Saturday 10/25
Week 4:  Sunday 10/26 through Saturday 11/01

The final $10 Bonus Certificate will be awarded to the angler catching the largest length fish overall (striper or bluefish) on the last day of the tournament (Sunday 11/2).  As stated above, the tournament will end at 12:00pm (noon) that day.

Good Luck To All!

I'm in, but will be fishing with non-members.  I don't think this will be a problem, since there are alot of people on the beach who are non members.

Nick, have your fishing partners sign up for the forum and make some posts. They get enough posts, only 10 needed, they can join in on the fun.  t^

Please note that I had originally posted the last day of the tournament as being Sunday, November 5, 2008. Sunday is November 2, 2008 and the date has been corrected in the original post. Sorry for any confusion/inconvenience.

Very nice idea, wish I knew something about surf fishing but I don't. If you have a BBQ, charge a fee and open it up to the "boating members"...

just a suggestion... t^

Good idea about opening it up to everyone. Will keep that in mind Ken.

Don't know if the BBQ will happen or not, but hoping it will.  t^

Great gesture Paul, thank you.

Gage, you can fish ANY day in between those two dates. Not a two day tourney. Tourney will last from the posted opening date until the ending date.  ;)

Hi guys, I asked about having the BBQ at the park and the use of the covered area and I was asked how many people are we talking about?

It seems like if we are going to be on the beach and using the parking lots and having a BBQ to boot as long as those that are not fishing we are good to go till dusk.  So if you are going to stay for a while just make sure you have a pole in your vehicle for each person in the car.

I know it will be hard to tell how many will be going to the BBQ till the last minute.  I would say to just go with it and meet either on the beach if you have access and park in a location that will make it easy to spot as you walk onto the beach.

I will be going there again tomorrow and talk to another person who might know a little more.

That sounds like the easiest thing to do.  Because it is done all the time, I am just waiting for conformation on the fires on the bathing beaches at that time of year.

All other areas except down by the inlet are OK for open fires.
