The bite is still on.
« on: November 28, 2008, 06:17:00 PM »
Hi All,

Went out today but I was lazy and stayed very local, Ortley Beach.  It was a west wind and felt cold but the tide and the water looked great so I figured why not.  Grabbed my small 8 footer and threw on an ANA A17 and started to throw away.  Before long bam a small striper around 26" about 15 min later bam again another short.  Tried a new lure a small 3" P-nut bunker imitation and bam another hit this time I lost it in the suds.  I knew I should of sharpened the hook.

Oh well not to bad for the bite being off for a while.  Talking to others there was some good catching from Ortley down to Gillikinds on IBSP.  Theren was a small fleet right in front of the Seaside Heights fishing pier for most of the day.

I am going to try and be out there early Sat. and see what happens.

Happy Catching

Paul

Yeah,  I got to get out now and then.

The strange thing about the bite though they are not hitting hard, almost like a fluke would hit.  I lost a couple at first but then it registered I had  to strike harder when I felt the tap.

It worked... ;)

Hey AJ,  I would say the majority of all the fish I saw and heard about were caught on lures.  Because It was cloudy it seemed that the yellow bomber and the yellow Mambo Minnow or any thing yellow for top water was working.

As for me and a lot of others it was all on the bottom with metals.  But like I mentioned above the retrieve on the metals was slooooow and low.  I am tying up a few teasers to try I hope for tomorrow in red.  I was told the past few days, red was the key color for these little helpers.  So I will give it a try, the only problem I only have red in marabou at this time, so I don't know how that will turn out.

I will post pictures when I figure out the scheme.  Maybe I should go with a Christmas theme of red and green???  5hrug

What ever, it should be fun putting them together.

Happy Catching

Paul

Here is a quick pix.  I have no idea why it started to unravel I guess Murphy was up and lurking... grtn Sorry

The hook size is a Gamakatsu 2/0 seems to work real well in the vice.  It is a baitholder hook but you take what they got.  :-\

different strokes for different folks ;D

Never tried all red but let us know how it works.

It seemed as like the other day the bait was a bit higher in the column, once i sped up the retrieve, I caught more.

I totally agree on the bite, the dab I caught the other day was probably the fiercest hit of the day.  ;D

AJ just remember use a slooooow retrieve.

And as for the color captainbailey , I know it sounds weird but now there are 2 guys who swear by it lately.  I guess a fish perspective of color is quite different and as red is the first color to disappear under water and turn into a value of gray it is not to far off the shades of gray of the bait probably.

If it is not to nasty tomorrow I will be giving it a try and let you know how it works out.

The color red starts to fade after sinking to a depth of about 12' or so.  I would imagine that in the shallow surf red would hold up pretty well. t^

Bob there are many conditions that one has to take into consideration and here is a small blurb on other factors that will lessen the 12' mark you suggest.

herre is a response to a similar question:

Dr. Bogus

Indeed your information in correct.  Light is absorbed by water according
to wavelength with the longer wave radiation (red) absorbed first.  Maximum
transmission is for short wavelengths of light (blue).  This is the case
for radiation in the VISIBLE range.  The peak in transmission for water is
in the blue wavelengths.  Beyond blue, even shorter wavelengths such as
ultraviolet, absorption increases again.

This absorption accounts for the disappearance of color from lures because
the color of light must be present to be reflected back to your eyes and be
seen.  In other words, a red lure will appear black in deep water because
no red light is present to reflect off the lure.

Please note however, that this is the case for clear water, such as the
open ocean and pristine lakes.  In nearshore waters, that contain high
amounts of colored suspended material, the colors that reach the deepest
will probably be green and yellow.  This is only because more blue light is
absorbed at shallower depths, not because green and yellow reach greater
depths.

Something to consider.

Paul

Good information Paul. TT^  Naturally you always have to take water clarity into consideration.  One thing to add to that then is that if the red is not holding up, then those throwing black teasers should have the same catch ratio as those throwing red teasers.

BTW, the guy's name is really Dr Bogus?!   rofla

I was wondering if you would pick that up but yeah it is his name. ;D

I think why you have the difference in catch ratios is because you never think of using red for the most part.  I know I haven't till a friend started using it this summer and has done quite well.

The thing is I don't think it turns a complete black in the shallower waters but a sort of brown as the color is not totally gone but 60 - 80 % is diminished by sand and other particles suspended in the water from the wave action.

I will be tying up a few more different patterns today and see what happens I will keep you posted.

Happy Catching
