I have decided to buy a new boat (used boat). Not a problem with the wife, be it a blessing and a curse she loves the ocean, boats and fishing. So she is all for another boat. So I decide what I want and go looking. Luck on my side I find a few. Narrow it down to two. Now I'm having a hard time deciding and looking for a little outside thought.
The boats are almost identical, the same year, make and model. The first has a 275 verado. Just under 400hrs and looks like he spent more time cleaning it than fishing. The second has twin 2 stroke 150's with just over 200 hrs. But he definitely wasn't into cleaning. A lot of little scratches and dull areas. Had a mechanic check out motors on both boats and all is good. The first one is $5000 more and comes with a trailer. The second one doesn't have a trailer. Now I like the idea of having twins. But most of my fishing is within 10 to 15 miles. Only a couple times of the year do I make it past that. I do move around a few times a year so a trailer is a necessity. But I know where to get one pretty cheap. But buying one that already has the trailer and from someone who looks to be pretty anal about his up keep is appealing. But so is saving $4000. I can't make up my damn mind! rgmn

I would need to see the boats and know what kind of fishing you do to help you decide.

unless the singe screw has an issue then hopefully you have sea tow atleast with the double you can be pretty sure youll make it home

Tow insurance for either boat is a no brainer.. Good luck with whichever boat you pick.

yes.. twin engines, double the headache, BUT the advantages out weight the disadvantages..
with twin engines, you can turn on a dime.. helps with docking and boat control. obviously if one motor goes down, the other can get you back.. also, with 2 props in the water, you have better power and control if the weather turns bad on you..
If both boats are that close of a decision for you, I would take the twins..

if they are Yamaha 2 strokes get them
if not get the Verado
$4000 buys a lot of gas and oil
supercharged 4-stroke has a lot to go wrong

I've always had sea tow for my boats. The twins are mercurys. Now I personally don't have any experience with the verados. I'm told they're good motors. Dont like the idea of having to 93 oct. to get the full hp out of it. Do realize the twins will cost a bit more in gas also.

I have twin Mercury EFI's.. Yes.. they will burn more gas but from my research, they are tanks and will last a very long time.
When it comes to 2 and 4 stroke, the Verados are 4 stroke.. better on fuel but you don't get true horse power.. In comparison, a 250 4 stroke is equivalent to a 200 2 stroke when it comes to speed and power. The 4 stroke is also a heavier motor with more moving parts.
The biggest advantage of the twin motors is the handling..

I'd go with the twins better handling of the boat, If one motor goes down you still have the other to bring you in no waiting for Seatow.

Well I finally made up my mind. Go with the 4 stroke. Give the owner a offer and he accepted it. Taking it out for a sea trial next Friday. If all goes well there will be a picture of a bald guy on his new boat next week.
