Accomplished a fishing goal (aka - Hudson Canyon trip 9-21/22)
« on: September 23, 2008, 06:27:27 PM »
Did an overnighter with a great bunch of guys on Capt Bobby Bogans Gambler from Point.
As usual NOAA was off. Arrived at the east wall at 11 Sunday night to flat calm conditions, too calm.  Glass seas, no wind, no current. Flat lines and chunks straight up and down all night.
Non-existant tuna bite. Zip,zero, nada in 8 hours of chunking.  Put the sword gear out and had my fish on by 1:30 AM.  200 feet down, green glow stick, 18" cuttlefish on a 12/0 offset hook. Not a monster by any means but the freezer is stacked with steaks!  My first ever.
My buddy boated a MONSTER wahoo at the same time that hit a sardine chunk. Can not believe this fish didnt cut through the fluro leader!!!! (Nice fish Rich!)
Hooked into another fish on the sword gear at 4 AM. Thought it was a nice sword until it got to the top and launched itself. Mako - from what the mates and Capt say, estimating around 300 lbs. Sick fish. Fought around 15 minutes or so until it found its way up the mono leader and cut itself free.  Almost had a shot at it with the flying gaff - so close but not to be.
Trolled at sunup and had a marlin nail the spread within minutes of getting the lures in.  Fought for 5 minutes and it threw the hook after some beautiful jumps. Another hour of trolling was uneventful.
Hit the pots by 8:30 and the Mahi fishing was lights out. Most pots LOADED with all gaffer sized Mahi. White 1oz Spros OR small whole squid on 3/0 hooks was the ticket.  Everyone loaded up and we piled fish into a "community" fish tote so everyone went home with bags of fillets.
No tuna and a slow night for most, but in the end all were smiling and have fish in the freezer.
Back out there in 2 weeks, hopefully the yellowfin start to show.

Hey Duffman

 w0w o@ thud

that's a great way to break a goal. The Gambler is a great boat to get out there on. You can't always get tuna. Very nice to have a couple of swords hooked and boated.

Great pictures and a freezer load of fun...many times the offshore is nicer than inshore when it comes to waves... Congratulations; I'm jealous >:D

Nice Job Duffman!  TT^

I was out there on the Dorismae IV. We were near you guys. We hooked into 3 small swords, released them, 6 1/2 foot mako jumped off our gaff, 2 wahoo hit our jigs putting some nice gauges in them did not land them, and about 150+ mahi. NO tuna.  Tuff season so far for the tuna this time of the year, Bite was better in July and early August. I hope October will produce for us. Good luck on your next trip.
