Heading up to Quincy Massachusetts on Saturday.

Fishing Saturday afternoon & Sunday morning for cod & winter flounder in Quincy Bay.

Have done well in the past fishing with both my son and I almost always limiting on both species each day.

Received an email last night from a friend of mine who fished 2 days this past weekend with the same captain I'll be going with.

They limited out on big flounder (Mass achusetts limit is 8 at 12"). They kept nothing under 14". Most in the 16-17" class. Bad news is that the draggers seemed to have wiped out the inshore cod (where have we heard this story before) and they only boated 1 cod in 2 days.

At this point the dragger fleet has got the cod down to a point where there were only two cod on my boat flounder fishing in 2014! About 10 and more years ago the cod were a nusance while trying to put flounder in the boat! The damn things would break rigs and straighten hooks. How I would be happy to see them again!
I am also in The GOM (groundfish) Recreational Advisory Panel representing recreational interests and the picture for cod is grim! There is a kill quota in The GOM of 386 tons, 200T of which was allocated to the draggers and none for the rec fishermen! NOAA believes that we will kill our quota in by-catch while fishing for haddock. It seems that thinking does not apply to draggers.
My biggest concern is that the draggers will now have to switch over to "something else" and for every dragger that chooses to target flounder that is another nightmare for us.
At the last RAP meeting I asked what we caould do now to prevent us from having the "cod conversation" for flounder in a few years and I was told to stay with the agenda!......Capt. Jason
