Title: A first on Pops Soul
Post by: Pops Soul on September 27, 2007, 09:17:59 AM
High all I have been out of commission for a while with a infected computer. But I have bee doing plenty of fishing. I was up Bulls Island on the Delaware for some small mouth fishing last Wednesday with a buddy of mine. He put the jinx on us when he slammed a hog of a small mouth on the first cast, then we couldn't put another in the boat the rest of the day. It was a slow bite on plastics but heard other guys saying they have been doing well on shiners. The wife and I fished Sea Girt reef on Saturday and caught a lot of Seabass and brought 4 home, the trip was cut short when I twisted up my wreck anchor pulling it out to make a move. Went back on Sunday with another anchor and fishing solo a lot of short SeaBass and Bergulls and my first ever Trigger fish. I headed back to the beach around 3:00pm to do a little trolling. With the boat in gear I was dropping my first line back, a diamond jig with a green tube, when something whacked it, boy was I caught off guard, my mental check list ran trough my brain ::), locked the reel into gear (did I even set the drag ? I hope so...), get the boat out of gear, line was peeling off the reel with the clicker making a lot of noise. There was a whole lot of head shaking going on and the fish still taking line started to tighten the drag (Yes I did set the drag, thank you) ;D. I got maybe 2 cranks on the handle when after a big head shake the hook pulled out, Oh well just another fish story now for a Sunday solo trip.........  ;)

Good job Skip.  Any time you need some company, if I don't have a trip going, just give a call.  Too bad you couldn't see what was on the hook, oh well, next time.

Hey Mike, you know what as a matter of fact I do believe I did have some Gulp on the
hook. t^ But I found out with most wreck fish they have teeth and bite the stuff in half. I should have taken a picture of the Gulp shrimp I had threaded on my top hook, bit clean in half  TT^

Hehehehe.

My biggest fluke this year (and close to ever) the 26" I caught in my avatar, the pink gulps tail was bitten off (about 15 fish earlier). It was just a little nub of gulp with a killie.

I have caught many a fish on just a little chunk of gulp and nothing else.

believe my onle seabass this year was on a gulp/kilie combo as well.

You know I love the stuff.

That shrimp is DEADLY on Raritan bay fluke when the shrimp are in early season.
