Hi All,
I would like to start this thread in hopes of sparking some winter projects. I have not tied in a long time or made plugs for that matter in a long time. I would like to see what others are tying or creating in hopes of creating new and exciting patterns.
As I finish a project I will post it here in hopes of gaining some creative criticism as well as helping others out that have not ventured into the realm of creating your own rigs.
This easy and exciting aspect of the fishing hobby can be very rewarding and just knowing that you made something that fooled another creature into a reaction that only nature can is worth the small initial expense.
I am slowly getting my tools back in order after a long hiatus away from something I loved.
I hope you will join me in making this winter a fun and productive time,. I hate sitting around reading what others are doing. Besides I need to fill my tackle box back up and I hate going out and buying commercial made things when I know I can do myself.
I am looking forward to seeing what others are doing so please join me in making this thread a success.
Happy Catching

hey paul,
couple years ago my dad (skip) got me a fly tying kit for one of my bdays. that managed to open a hole portal to tying my own stuff, ive gotten away from tying flys as much but now tie my own fluke rigs that have produced alot of fish i have even gone on to selling them occasionally. when i get home for break i'll post some pics of them for the you and the guys

Hey Paul,
I have been tying flies whenever I get a chance for trout season in the spring. I have my own patterns that I have been doing very well with over the years and I am working on some new ones that orvis hasn't called their own yet. I went a little crazy during fluke season with some of my own custom fluke rigs (ask hotrod about his ;D). Teasers are so easy to tie and so expensive to buy in the store. With a gamakatsu hook they cost me 20 cents to make, add a 3oz ball for another 45 cents and bam!! you got an identical ball jig to what you see in the store that costs 4 bucks, or add a spro looking weight for 60 cents. You won't be as ticked off when you get snagged on the bottom. So those are my projects, trout flies and crazy teasers for fluke.
-
Boy you guys sound like your on the right track. I posted a couple of teasers I tied in the 'From The Suds' thread but here they are again. Let me know what yo9u thing.
I first tie them with using only head cement and if the pattern looks and works well I then use a 5 min epoxy to finalize them.
I will be tying a bunch over the winter I am going to try a jigs like SPRO in pink and white to use for Weakies next year. It should work well with a pink Fin-S curly tail or something.
These teasers are about 4 1/2 " long. I tied a few more about 5" long and they look better. I am using a circle hook to see hwo they respond I'll let you know.

very nice Paul, I use epoxy on all my saltwater flies as well. The eyes look great on the teasers, but if you want to save some bucks, go with the plain hourglass beads.
If you know any hunters, tell them to save the tails for your teasers. I'm going to try and dye some this year. I going to experiment with some this winter. Saltwater can punish what you tie, hopefully I can find a durable dye to use.
-
Thanks Brian,
My brother in law hunts and I have a couple of tails, I have one not by him in yellow I will try it and post it when done.
-
I had a friend drop off 18 bucktails today. I pour Spro jigs with a Do-it mold. I put a base coat of white on the jig and turn it over to another friend (along with the bucktails). He ties the bucktail onto the jig and paints them different colors. He also dyes the bucktails different colors.
We then share the finished products. TT^
-
Sounds like you got the best of both worlds Joe. Why not throw up a couple of pictures of the work so we can see different styles of tying.
I am always interested in trying new patterns.
Paul
-
I will have to take some pics and post them. t^
-
Thanks, I would love to see them.
Like I said always looking for new patterns.
Paul

Hi All.
did not get out yet today waiting for a call that did not come yet.
Tied these teasers though. I noticed the other day that the sand eels were very light in color with an iridescent red and silver glow to them so here is a pattern I tied to mimic them.
First is dry second is wet.
The first teaser is on a 2/0 long shank hook the second is in a 1/0 red Gami octopus hook.

Me too, especially after this blow this weekend.
My wife and daughter had a surprise B-Day party for me at the Lobster Shanty in Toms River this past Sat. What a blast.
Now I have to look for something else to do. I have a number pf projects but it is so hard to get started with them.
Paul
-
Early party huh. Lucky you. t^
You get to have another party Christmas eve. t^
I'll wait till then to wish you a Happy B-day. ;D
-
Thanks Joe,
Yeah well when I was young I had very few parties so when I got older and married my parties shifted earlier for obvious reasons.
Paul
-
Yeah Paul,
I know a couple of people who were born on Christman Eve or Day. They would always get one gift with a 'Merry Christman AND Happy Birthday' wish. Seemed to me that they got cheated every year out of a gift.
Nice of your family to do that for you. t^
-
I know, if it was not for my wife I would only have a combo. It was that way for most of my life. Now we can make all the changes we want, we are the only oldies left except for a few aunts and uncles on my side and my wife's sisters.
It feels unusual and uncomfortable to have a birthday party. Thats OK I will learn to live with it. grtn

Nice! you guys tie some beauties. I tie some Buck Tail(Deer tail)on a 2/0,3/0,4/0 long shank Mustad in white or brown (cause thats the tail color)and have used and caught nice fluke while using them as teasers tied on a dropper loop 18-20'' off the bottom, or off a 2oz.Bucktail spro.BUT after seeing some of the others I will try to tie some different colors and styles. WHATs BEST WAY TO DYE THE HAIR ? Food color doesn't seem to work.
-
There are a few dies out on the market that should work but the only way I believe was to use natural coloring with an arsenic base. Not very safe I would think.
The way I would dye them would be with RIT in a cold vinegar solution. Plus I was told to bleach them first in a mild solution, bleach and water combo, it is suppose to make the color more vibrant?
Let us know if you try this. I only have 1 buck tail left my cousin "fenwick", "Woj" NJ-Hunter.com, is an avid hunter and will be getting me a new supply hopefully this winter. I am looking forward to using real bucktails again.
Paul
-
these are my fluke rigs, i first snell the english style hook then wrap a nylon buck tail on it with a red thread. above it is 2 beads a spinner (indiana style) followed by two more beads, colors can be what ever choice you pick. i usually tie them with a chartruse tail with white beads or chartruse beads, i also tie a white tail with red beads and i tie a chartruse on top of white with a mix of beads. Caught a lot of fish with these rigs. bad side is when the blues are around i often have to take the spinner off cuz they just eat'em up

Nice ties Drew.
I love getting back into tying again. I for got how much I enjoy it. There is something about making your own lures and having fooled a fish into thinking it was natural food. It is hard to explain.
Paul
-
Hi All,
How many tie their own lures, rigs, teasers and flies? Plus what type of equipment do you use. I have found out that over the years you don't need expensive equipment to enjoy the are of tying.
You can pick up a Deluxe kit for less than $60.00 from Cabelas or Shark River Mail Order. Pick up some good colored material and some thread and go to it. If you need help just ask and I am sure there will be a number of us out here that can help.
In the next few days I will try to put up some pictures of my equipment so you can see how simple it really is. I might even give a video a try I will have to see on that one though.

I picked up a fly vice and thread holder thingie at one of the tackle flea markets last year.
I clamp a lure/hook into the vice, hold a bunch of hair or whatever material I am using against the lure/hook. I then wrap white, black or red thread around the hair/material onto the lure/hook. I finish it off with several half hitches (mothing more than back turns on the line) and put clear or red nail polish over the thread. This works to my satisfaction.
I am usually not a real stickler for a perfect wrap when I know chances are, I will be leaving the lure/hook in a bunch of structure before my creation will unravel. TT^
If I want a really quality wrap, I pass my lure/hook off to a friend who does an excellent job that will last.
-
That will work just fine Joe. Something very simple to think about is getting a 5 minute epoxy and mix a small amount and apply it to the wraps works great and lasts quite a long period of time.

Hi Guys, I tie my own teasers out of bucktail and some old rod making threads I have left over (not enough to continue to use on rod building). Finish em off with some nail polish that better half has around that are not being used.I place the hook in an old table vise that my Dad gave me years ago;place the thread in a bobbin, sip on a glass of wine and make 6 to 9 in a quick night.
If you loose em who cares. They do catch fish.
QUESTION ? What other material do you guys use, other than bucktail, and have you had success. Feedback Please. Thanks AJ
-
Hi AJ,
Here are a few I tied today. I used white & yellow bucktail, blue flash, black flash, red and yellow hackels.
The hook is a 2/0 long shank offset barb that I adjust for little less offset.
All windings are set with thread sealer or nail polish. If I like the pattern I will take the time to 5 min epoxy them.

Paul, they look good and I am sure catch fish.I am going to tie some with hackle and flash. Will let you know how they come out. Thanks AJ

Sweet setup. Mine is on a roll around cart and everything seems to be all over the place. I use my studio as my fly tying area which is a tight room with all my art stuff, ham gear, drafting table and oh yeah, fly tying bench.
I need more room but there isn't any left. 5hrug
I will have to take some pictures to show you my mess er, I mean my studio.

this year we decided to make our own bucktails and it is driving me nuts ,I wake up and get tying and it seems like it never ends ,I have about 60 or more made up now and owe some to friends .This sunday sam fluke dud and I are pouring a couple hundred more.

-
Nice box of lead heads you got there. That must of took some time. Good luck with them.
-
driving me nuts ,I dont have an air brush this year so I am hand painting them ,I cant wait to finish ,it is more work then fun at this point .When I have 100 for the season I can stop .
-
Have you tried dipping them or using the powder paint? I heard that the powder once you get use to it you will never go back to the liquid paint again.
I've dipped mine and it seems to work OK, got to let it drip off a little but sure beats painting with a brush. I also use an air brush but even with that method it is a pain to clean the unit after. I am a stickler and have to take it all apart to clean it instead of just spraying thinner through the gun.
Paul
-
I tried powder the other day for the first time in years and I can say it is the way to go ,I will never brush on again ,I am waiting for some glow powders to arive in the mail tommorow so I can continue painting ,only thing is you have to cure them in the oven to harden them and they drip so if you dont put something under them your wife will not be happy.I always put a coat of krylon cryistal clear over the top and you can slam them on the ground and they dont chip
-
I kind of figured you tried it. Check on the wife category. She has put up with a lot over the years with my fishing antics.
-
I have to agree on the wife part ,mine found her oven glitter blue tonight and wasnt happy and I have the guys comming over on sunday for a flounder chum party.I see they have a devise that lifts the paint in the air now and it spins it ,I want to look into it ,I might be heading to a dealer show in s.c. soon and want to check it out.I have been tring to make epoxy heads but they keep coming out messed up so my goal is to learn them next, one great tip I learned yesterday was dont use a torch to heat your bucktail inside ,they drip and lead lands on the wife carpet
-
Not to mention the lead fumes it gives off when heated. What is the working temp of the paint and how close is it to the melting point of the lead?
It has to be below that I am sure or it will distort the jig every time.
I know regular powder coat would be very close the melting point of lead but it has to be something similar. 5hrug
-
it is close but what I learned is just heat it for a couple sec. then put them in the oven and let it cure ,if you look at the red ones above they are powder ,I tried all temps and found if you heat the lead to much it is sloppy ,5 seconds is plenty I do the desired amount then put them in the oven for 10 minutes at 350 and they are ready for the eyes ,then I spray 2 coats over them and tye ,I have more colors comming so I will post them results as I go ,I have to say I have been selling these localy to pay for my own supplies and people seem to be paying the same as a spro for them
-
Yeah, I just answered my own question as I read the procedure in the Barlow's catalog.
I heard that pre heating is the key to a smooth finish. That is what they do in normal powder coating. They preheat at 400 deg or so then spray and back in to cure.
-
I dip mine and they come out w/ a rough surface ,I then hang on the oven rack for 10 min. I never sprayed them I can do 10 heads in a couple minutes in one color ,fluke dud has some very nice multi patterns that I am gonna steal off him soon.he bought a custom football jig head that we are pouring this weekend in sizes 1-4 I am eager to see what it looks like in the water
-
Good luck with the pour. I like the SPRO pattern and have had good luck with them.
I am not sure what I will be using on March 1st this year. Last year I used eels and did pretty good, I have a number of SPRO's I want to try with different tails. Plus I might use a Storm shad.
Too many choices. Not enough time...
Talk to you tomorrow got to hit the sack.

Hi All,
Just sitting here and tying up a few rigs for the up coming season and thought about a small video clip I saw the other day where they were tying uni knots using a pair of hemostats.
Being that is one knot I use often so ZI tried it and let me tell you these arthritic hands wound up tying 3 sets of fish finder rigs in less than 10 min.
What a difference.
Put the line through whatever you will be tying weather it is a swivel or hook to form a loop with about 3" of tag line. Put the hemostats into the loop and do at least 3 twists and grab the end of the line and clamp down the hemostats and pull the end through the loop. moisten the knot with saliva and pull tight. Its finished.
What a relief for these gettin' old bones.

I actually bought a knot tying tool at the fly fishing show in Somerset last month. I never thought that I would by a gizmo like that but I'm all thumbs when my hands are cold!
-
I had a number of hemostats lying around, I use them for fly tying so it was just picking up a pair and trying it. It is so simple why didn't I think of this or see this before.

Nice tip Paul. t^

OK, I know its been a while but I have been messing around with some new stuff and have been tying P-Nut bunker teasers. They might not look to pretty but when they are wet they look great.
Hook sizes are 2/0, 3/0, and 4/0.
I will be experimenting over the winter and by the time rolls around I should have the pattern down pretty good.
Lets see your winter projects.

Looks real nice...dead on for p-nuts! What color do you think will get the most hits. I am going with one of the bottom two ;D!
TT^
-
I would think the middle two but I have learned that color and water make for strange combos that work in many different ways. I am looking forward to trying the top one in low light conditions.
-
They all look good enough to catch ;)!
TT^
-
Here are a few I have been experimenting with lately.
Sorry for some fuzzy pics but you get the idea.
-
A few more...
-
Very nice Paul. Let's hope the fish think so too. ;D
I'v been doing some reading lately and thinking about trying my hand and tying a few simple teasers.
-
It is not hard Chris. If I can do it so can you. I saw that there was some interest on another thread so instead of posting there I posted them here so we can keep this thread going.
If I get some time and if I can get some one to run the camera I will try to put together a video. Something simple for the beginner to view and have fun with.
I have been using circle and modified circle hooks for these new teasers. I know the circle hooks work well off the surf as I have been catching most of my late season bass on them.
I cant wait to try out the P-Nut bunker patterns out this season.
If you want to try before youy buy give a call and stop over it will not take long to get you tying then like a pro.

Nice! ;D
-
You guys are way to fancy for me, I don't think fluke care that much about the detail.
-
This might be true for fluke but with so many other species around matching the hatch is key. For that reason alone I try to use different colors and patterns. Besides it is a great stress reliever.
I have tied many different patterns over the years and there are a few that work well for me but I love to mix and match, that is why I like to use a dropper loop as it is very easy to change out the teasers as I do quite often till I find the right combination.
Happy Catching

I think I'm gonna take you up on the offer Paul. I'm not looking to do anything fancy, just a few simple ones to have a small inventory.

I am a true believer in making my own
I tie bucktails 4 and 6 ounce as well as teasers
The teasers are deadly and have caught many 8 lb flattys

Anytime Chris, it is always a pleasure to be in your company. Your teasers and streamers look great, you should have no problem creating your own. Your tying ability seemed to come very easy. You should be knocking them out with no trouble.
And Greg aka ReelTime it was nice to see you and thanks in advance for your help. It like like Friday will be a wash out. I will be in touch to see if zI can scrounge up some more helpers for the roof.
