Title: Striped ones are here
Post by: Fisherman120 on October 27, 2014, 07:53:12 PM
Haven't fished in 7 weeks since the NJSW fluke trip on the Monger and have been dying to get out, just been busy with class and work. The few times I planned to get out the weather had other plans. Talked to my dad yesterday about fishing today and originally opted not to because of the winds and lack of encouraging reports from Sunday. Called him at 9 last night and said screw it, let's take a risk. I knew I'd wake up today and regret not going immediatley.

Went on a NSPB out of Belmar, about 25 people were on but it was spacious. Ran out to the Mudhole where we fished for most of the day. Bluefishing was slow/picky, at 2:00 I had lost 3 and boated 1. My dad lost 2 and caught only 1, I don't think anybody boated more then 5. Capt blew the whistle and said were not going in, were gonna try our luck tight to the beach since striped bass have been around. Did a few drifts, nothing happened when they got a call to go a bit south and then it was game on for everybody but us. I had no hits and my dad had 2 stripers but they both spit the hook. In those 45 minutes around 30 keeper stripers were boated.

5 minutes left in the last drift, I cast out my black Ava with a Gold Spoon like I had been doing most of the day, not changing a thing, I always believe in myself. Halfway up I'm talking to my dad not expecting anything when I get whammed and the fish immediatley started taking drag. Biggest fish at this point was around 20 lbs and I knew this was bigger, felt like a "livelining" striper. Few minutes later I was able to get it boated and was shocked to see her. She was about 43/44 inches and weighed 32 lbs. I've caught lots of bass around 25-30 lbs and my biggest went 40, but this was all livelining in May/June so this one on the jig in October is special. What a great day

Nice catch.

It was a tad sloppy out at the mudhole today. Don't ask how I know.  ;D

It's like your typical Ava jig except the Spoon was Gold like a croc. I can get a picture later or tommorow
