Welcome to the NJ Kayak Fishing Forum.
-
AH ha...now I get it... yak fishing... was trying to figure out that other post from DAK the YAK... TT^
-
As all of you are painfully aware, gas prices are making it tough on the wallet to get out fishing these days. So more and more folks are turning to kayaks as a means to wet their lines. All you need to power a yak is a good hoagie and a choice beverage (I prefer the adult kind). And this trend is bound to keep growing - I can envision a day when there will be just as many human powered boats as gas powered on the water!
Kayaks are subject to their own special considerations, limitations, and advantages. This forum will be the perfect place to post tips, hints, questions, and of course, fishing reports related to kayak fishing in NJ.
Special thanks to Hotrod for starting this up...

Rod great idea!! Gives NJSWF an even greater variety of members now! This place is awesome...

Great start up. I have been looking at Yaks for a while now but I am not really ready to make the jump just yet. I do have issues with my hips so the sit on top boats are a problem and I did find one boat (Slo-Mo Boats) but for the equipment I want on it to make it suitable for me will bring it in the $2,000.00 range something I am having a hard time factoring into my budget (daughter starting college this year).
There are a great number of my friends that have sit ons and are having a great time and catching loads of fish behind IBSP. I just wish I was able to join them.
A friend went out yesterday and reported very cold water at the inlet in the mid 50'S again which made the bite shut down.
Oh well enough os my ranting. Good forum, looking forward to reading the info that it should generate.
Happy Catching

Welcome to all of you new guys....can't wait to see the new posts about the Kayaking end of this sport we all love. I also look forward to hearing more reports from down South here! Where do all you guys do your Kayak fishin?
-
Past couple seasons we've been hanging around the back side of Sandy Hook (Spermaceti & Horseshoe Coves) but with today's gas prices there are a few of us who are starting to scout out Wreck Inlet, Absecon Inlet, Absecon Bay & the waters around Tuckerton. Looking for areas that most powerboats can't get to...
We've also been known to launch off the surf when the conditions are right.
I know I'm looking forward to getting into the southern waters & posting up catching reports!
-
Hey I recognize you guys. Good job Flea, the more the merrier. Welcome herder and flyguide! grtn I think you will find this place very accomodating. Rod created this yaking forum just cause I asked him if there was one. I'm in the middle of writing a yak fishing primer - please feel free to post any contributions I can paste in, or point out any screw-ups, untruths, omissions, etc.
Hopefully we can use this forum to help convert some folks over to the dark side. With gas prices the way they are, that shouldn't be hard.
-
Welcome Herder and Flyguide!! I think you will enjoy it here. Look forward to reading your posts!

New guy here. See a couple of old kayak friends that have posted here. I really like this site and will gladly share info with the group.Look forward to your reports.
Seaflea and I fished the backside of Brigantine last Sunday. We managed to get 2 nice keeper fluke on the NJ "surf and turf" hi low rig. Pink gulp on the high also produced a bunch of shorts. All fish caught a low tide.Hope to get out again this Sunday evening and have another great fish dinner on Monday and Tuesday. I'm off to Seattle( Widby Island) on Wednesday on my wifes business trip and won't be back for the following weekend.
My memory of last August was that we caught a bunch of brown sharks and threshers about 1/4 mile offshore Brigantine on live snagged bunker. It was a blast not seeing an 80lb fish for 20 minutes while the drag was screeming. False albies and cocktail blues also were present so you need to have one rod ready to go.Hope to do it again this August. chrz

Welcome Robbie.. Thanks for joining us.. please.. make yourself at home t^
-
Welcome Robbie. Nice catch and thanks for the info! Enjoy your vacation. Will you be doing any fishing out there??
TT^
-
I don't think I'll be fishing in Seattle this time. I used to live there and in Alaska as a kid and caught more fish in 4 years then I will in my whole adult life. I may watch them toss a few salmon around in Pikes market.
I will however be taking a 1 hour test flight ( as a passanger)in a Ea-6B prowler at the Naval air station at Whidby Island.

Real cool aircraft, I love electronic warfare... t^

Nice! I would love to do some fishing out there. Maybe one day?? I don't think I could handle being a passenger in one of those!
Enjoy!

I first went for a beach launch around 7:30 this morning,,perfect conditions w/ a west wind, foot high lappers,,got my yak(hobie outback w/ wheels)to waters edge down at Ortley beach and can't explain it, I just didn't feel good about it,,no boats/yaks outfront,a few beach oddities fishing,, I just sat on my yak and looked, looking odd myself, decided against it,,drove back to Point Pleasant inlet and watched guys catching shorts on corner along w/ the K-Mart specials fishing, God bless them they'll learn if they stay at it,, I finally left and launched for river/tribs,, caught alot of fluke on killies/squid, 1 1/2 oz,biggest 15",saw alot of bait pods not sure what they were, snappers were abundent though didn't have set-up 2 catch them,,tide was incoming stayed till outgoing both tides produced action, was easy fishing, very little boat traffic.
-
Nice report!! Sounds like a fun day YAK fishing. Funny, how it is always best to go with your gut no matter what.
TT^
-
Those feelings should never be overlooked. Good going... t^
-
Sounds like a nice easy day fishing, I like them. This reminds me, though, by this time of year the snappers are usually ravaging my baits, making confetti out of my $1.50 a piece gulps. I ain't had one so far, where they at? Not complaining...just wondering.
-
Hey Guys, great forum! I just joined yesterday while researching kayak saftey. I am picking up my firsy Yak this week...Hobie Outback Mirage. Looking forward to getting some fish on board soon. I mainly fish around Cape May, and then the freshwaters up in PA. Anyone down near Cape May? I have Stripers on my mind... ;)
-
Welcome to the site Paul.
Good luck with your new Yak
-
Welcome to "Dark Side", Paul!
Don't get down to Cape May but the Brigantine has some nice water to fish & has easy launch sites... Hope to see you on the water - Good luck with the Outback!!
-
Welcome Aboard Paul,
Congrats on your new Yak, good luck with her.
I am still on the fence as to weather I can handle one or not but that is a long story.
If you are going to target stripers this time if year you want to do it before dawn or after dusk as they are pretty elusive now and usually only hunt at night close in.
This is not to say that you can't be lucky but the higher percentages go up during the evening hours.
Happy Catching
Again Welcome Aboard.
Paul
-
Thanks for the welcome guys! I usually fish the sods and bridges at night for stripers, and now with the kayak, my opportunities should grow! Now I can get to places I have only been able to "look" at from the road. I am thinking of getting the integrated livewell since it is made to fit into the Outback. Cant Wait till Friday!
-
Welcome Paul and good luck with your new kayak!!
TT^
-
Went out yesterday(thursday) in manasquan river region,,using squid/spearing combo,1oz sinker w/ and outgoing tide, easy to move around, boat traffic was light, caught plenty of shorts to keep me occupied and not wanting to change my offerings believing sooner or later a keeper would show-up,nope. Still always enjoy being on the water. Get out be safe, tight lines.

what is next , BIKERS IN SPANDEX PANTS ;D t^ hhppy

Good going Rick,
At least you were catching I have been stuck in the studio doing some other work than painting.
I have to expand it a little so it will accommodate my daughter as well. She is starting college this fall and taking a number of art classes, well thats another story.
Were you up around the canal? I hear they are starting to slowly pick up weakfish here and there.
Will you be going out to IBSP Sat. night? Ken is having another showing and this time I believe there are a number of people from the site that will be there as well. I might be going but a little later this time.
Happy Catching
Paul
-
Hey Paul,, no I wasn't near the canal,, I should try there just to mix it up a little,,amazes me how I know many people that have caught keepers and I haven't caught one,, I sulk just a little bit when given fillets from friends,, I can give tomatoes.
Thats great to help your daughter,, family should always be number one priority.
I plan on taking the ride down, hope we get perfect weather and people running for the right reasons down the beach,SHARK ON!
Why do I imagine Ken burning 12,000 calories?
-
I don't know about the 12.000 calories but I have to say he puts his all into the night. I wish him continued success.
Maybe there will be a Thrasher landing, that would be great.
-
anybody having fun in the yak? I certainly am,,small bass are out there(never left) and weakies are showing how pretty they are,,along w/ an assortment that would look great in an aquarium.
Night time is the only time.Personal choice and you catch more fish!
-
Nice catching! No yak here, but I have been trying to get out fishing in the Bay from the shore at night and early mornings!
Good Luck!
TT^
-
Good going Rick. Sounds like your outings are getting better. I haven't been out in over a week and I'm getting cabin fever. The family is going to IBSP for a Sunday evening dinner on the beach and some fishing. My daughter went swimming over there yesterday and said that there was bait all over the place along with loads small jellies.
Happy Catching

I was in the bay last night caught small bass and what I believe were hickory shad,,I can be wrong, these brutes were big up to maybe 14" and smell fishy, looked like baby tarpon, everything was hitting teasers, and one bass hit my "smack-it". What I amazed at was the amount of bait in the water,I mean jumping outa the water, skipping on the water, I think they had feet, shinning my light I saw a zillion spearing, It was tough getting fish on with all the other offerings, I just hope all this bait helps keep the "fall run" close to home.Ultra light gear
-
Thanks for the info...
Yes, there certainly was a lot of bait in the Bay. I was tossing a small popper the other night and making them all jump out of the water. Not too many fish feeding on them. The spearing were thick, like pea soup. I was snagging one or two here or there on the popper. Even right at the shoreline, there were enough that I could just bend over and grab them by the handful. Pretty neat. Spearing was the talk that night at the launch too. All the guys/gals going out in yaks were all talking about the massive increase in spearing!
Hopefully the mullet are that thick as well. I haven't seen any myself, but I have read a bunch about them. I think we are all crossing our fingers that this will help get the fish going for the Fall Run.

I'm going out now b4 the Hannah routine roughs things up,in the darkness, rather warm out,my target is weakfish, gonna use sandworms and small rattletraps/pink F-S jigs,,I've been catching them but nothing to brag about, small but so pretty.
-
I hope your careful out there as there is a band of rain going through Pa. now heading our way. When you check back in and leave a post to let us know your OK...
Paul
-
Thanx Paul for your concern, you are a genuine good man, when I go out I always tell at least one person where I'll be and expected time of return along w/ bringing my cell. When I get into fish I send pics to friends. My other routine is to call a friend that works nights sharing when I'm outa the water. We can't be safe enough cause as we know even w/ the best of plans bad things do happen. Last night I played around bridges, I caught fish but not my target weakfish, just a variety of guys that would look nice in an aquarium all on sandworms. I did use two set-ups, bottom sandworms and worked jigs/rattletrap w/o a tap.I consider all I'm doing now as a precursor for when the bass start showing up in numbers/size. Learning how to keep myself in current/angles,working in choppy conditions,re-rigging on the go,locating holes/drop-offs w/ fishfinder/gps.My focus is now to find the best outfit to wear as the temps drop,,lots to choose from and pricey. Last night I did get rained on as I expected. I didn't have rain gear on as I'm a little dumb, walking out it was warm and humid,, the rain was the sort that didn't hurt was refreshing and I did get soaked thru every layer. My lesson learned last night is bringing a large towel and another set of clothes if needed/raingear also. I'm a novice in the yak,,though by reading and listening to others I've learned alot of valuable info.Though the best teacher is doing w/ some knowledge, being safe and figuring out what works best for you. The shower when I got home was welcomed. If anybody wants to buddy-up or share lessons or would like some helpful info that I have gained send me a message. I would welcome being a guest or vice versa.
-
Nice going Rick. Thanks for re-posting. I checked the radar just after you left and noticed the rain band coming through. Not good...I am glad you had no trouble and learned some things in the process.

nosmly Ah I had a great time kayak fishing down here in FL. wish I known it was a growing thing back home because I wouldn't have sold my redfish 14.
UGH
-
Look at this way it is one less thing you have to move back up. Thee are plenty of sales and good deals up here. If you get the urge I know a couple of friends that have multiple kayaks maybe we could get a trip together in the spring.
The water right now on the flats behind Island Beach State Park is around 76 as of last night. The fishing back there is red hot right now. Stripers, blues, sharks, cow nose rays. Oh my...
A buddy of mine went out Monday and caught 3 stripers just off a sedge island in an hour and a half, not bad.

Hello everyone first time post I was drifting the channel and a boat came by saying its a bad spot to be in a kayak so I yelled back at him no need to repeat what I yelled back but basically said I have every right to be here so 10 min go bye here he comes full speed 15 feet away from me almost lost it what I'm getting at can you fish the channel that's the way I was tout to fish m I wrong
-
You might have every right to be there but in all reality you will loose the battle. The bigger guys have no clue that you have issues in a kayak so they treat you like any other boat. Although I am new to kayaking (this is my second year) I would not venture out to a busy channel where I know the wave action will be, well lets call it challenging.
In my case I prefer to fish the back side of IBSP around the sedge islands and now with the cut thru the fishing is awesome back there. Plenty of blues and smaller stripers galore.
Try fishing it in low light and the action becomes even better.
Happy Catching

I recommend fishing these busy areas early in the morning when they are not so busy. Like before 7AM and during weekdays. Other than that be very very careful even in no wake areas around bridges. Most boaters don't abide by these rules. Always have a flag on your kayak and wear a life jacket and a whistle. Happy kayaking ;D
-
Thanks guys I was in the back bay no prob all day just one Ahole good luck happy fishing

grtn Hey all. Trying kayak fishing for the first time with the Frog Hopper guide. Starting in a lake first to get my feet wet. Wish me luck and a big bass on the line! chrz

TT^Good Morning all just registered on NJSWF looks like a great site! Can't wait to start kayaking still in the misted of get my yak and all my gear that I need. In the mean time just tryin to meet some ppl who've been kayaking for awhile. You know what they say safety first and teaming up with a group is a plus! So here I am and once again hello to ALL! :)
-
let me chime in, I started with kayak fishing, about 15 years ago, boy do I miss it, I just got too old. but anyway always be safe. and always carry a compass. last fall about 2 miles of ibsp I came across two kayakers heading to some distant land. It was very foggy and they were going the wrong way. I escorted them back to the beach and I felt great that they were safe.
-
Hi everyone JBlaze here new to the whole Kayaking thing. I've done some research and I know I going to love it! I hope to be out on the water in my own kayak next season as I want to take the time for now to rig mine up as I see fit. I hope by the time I'm ready to launch my adventure I will have met with a few ppl to go out on the water and have some fun. Safety first and goin yakin with with some great yaker's is all the battle.
